There seems to be more agreement on the music we like than on most topics . . .

Jimi, if I ever have the privilege of visiting you aboard you won't need to turn the stereo down . . .

A couple more suggestions:

Little Feat (Sailing Shoes of course, among others)
and . . .
what about your namesake, the other Jimi?

Agree with Mark Knopfler, but add Enya, Clannaid, Cold Play, David Grey and Ladysmith BM, but only once the sails are up and the engine is off!

Whatever you choose you have to be careful when & where you play it.

We were minding our own business sailing along the SE. coast of Jura playing Led Zep., Derek & the Dominoes & Cream when a very large Customs boat shot out of the Snd of Islay and rapidly caught us up and came close alongside.
Embarassingly, we had not heard them calling us on the VHF as the cockpit speakers were blasting out "Cocaine".
When we sheepishly turned it off they attempted to question us via Loudhailer. Honours were made even because to their embarassment it didn't work because its batteries were flat.

Not entirely

Berlioz - L'Enfance du Christ is very soothing in rough weather, as is Faure's Requiem. Mind you, the best thing of all when it's grey and lumpy and cold and miserable is a cricket commentary from the Caribbean. It's important to be able to hear the conch shells. I have, incidentally, not the remotest interest in cricket.

Re: Charms to soothe the savage breast...

It would seem that practically nobody listens to music (as distinct from noise)
on board. Not the least mention of Johann or Wolfgang and surely Haydn's
String Quartets are essential listening. I am the Captain of my ship and we
shall leave port to the Tannhauser overture....errr yes, dear, of course, yes,
after Dire Straits...

We have a CD of bagpipe music (and deck speakers) to be used in the small hours as a weapon of mass destruction in the event of anti-social vessels alongside.
Otherwise; 70's disco, Floyd, Madness, dance, anything really, in fact we have a house rule that all crew must bring at least one CD on every trip.

Errm, is this a similar intellectual argument to "it ain't a proper boat unless it's made of wood and at least 80 years old"? :)

I don\'t think so

Just that Joseph and Wolfgang and Ludwig and Dmitri and Johann Sebastian and Guiseppi and Claudio etc. etc. etc. (and even Richard) wrote stuff that is ten billion trillion zillion times more worthwhile than anything else mentioned here.......:)

I thought this argument was at least 2 generations out of date...

Yes, it's "good" music, but it's not the only "good" music...:)

Re: Sit down! You\'re rocking the boat

Everyone knows that "music" came practically to a halt in the 60's when
Brejhnev and the KGB (based on earlier work by Pavlov) launched their project
on the unsuspecting West. "Music" based on a bass bump-bump-bump (time signature 72, reminiscent of the maternal heart beat) followed by endless vocal
repetition (this type of hypnotic brainwashing has been used by all sects) to
reduce the (faithful) listeners to cabbage status.
Listening to the same CD from Cowes to Cork illustrates the technique.
With reference to Bass Expanders, combustion engineers know that low frequency vibrations can provoke spontaneous vomiting: has anyone data on
seasickness and the use of such "music"? (IMHO, of course)....

Re: The Floyd ......

I've got every Floyd track in MP3 on one cd if you want a copy for your new player. It'll have to be after I burn a copy of the entire Beatles Collection in .wav format for h00's daughter that I promised ages ago.

Re: Addio del passato

Well, I wouldn't have put it so mildly myself. And there was someone who mentioned Mendelssohn (must have been married) so all is not lost. And in
case anyone thinks I'm bigotted or that my judgements are personal or non-
objective (rather than helpful) I do have several CD's of Art Tatum (close friend of Vladimir Horowitz) and Stephane Grapelli (recorded Bach's double concerto in D with Menuhin and Django Rheinhardt). All dead, of course (including Bach). But THEIR music lives on. (Like my STEEL boat: could it be classical???).
