Anybody have advice on replacing curtains with venetian blinds for a motorboat saloon? My wife seems to think we simply measure and order off internet, & I can see there's a venetian blind shop not too far away. Anybody who's retrofitted these was it a case of buying & fixing yourselves, or did you get somebody in, and is there something such that it's better to get somebody specialising in boat venetion blinds (if there is such a person)?

Well I would fit myself as they mit hammer drill and put rawl plugs in for a fix.

If the windows are a regular shape then any supplier can probably help but as Seastoke says, installation should be done with care as non-marine suppliers are unlikely to be familiar with working on boats and fixing methods will differ.

If shapes are involved then a specialty marine supplier might be necessary / the better option.

Most blind suppliers will be able to assist. You need to measure the windows length & drop. What side you want the mechanism to be on. Make sure starboard & port matches the supporting strings etc.

Fitting, I would do myself or supervise the installer.

The main thing is you need vertical strings or they will slap about all over the place and destroy themselves rapidly.

No one other than boat suppliers ( £££££) provide them.

You can get some conservatory blinds that have them so they don't fall down but getting what you want maybe difficult.

You can modify them yourself by drilling. The wires are steel and you need springs in the middle hidden in the header so the strings go tight.

I use electric waffle blinds as they are good at providing a soft light in med sun when closed and also privacy. They also are simpler to clean. Venetians are not.

Or you put the blinds up when at sea. However my boat has blinds and my wife says she would prefer curtains.

Yes. Keep the curtains. Or get new curtains.

We got some blinds from The Range which we modified and fitted ourselves. We could only fit where they covered vertical windows. Angles or sloping screens were not possible. The boat originally had curtains and it replaced them very nicely.
