Moody 34

Buying another boat is difficult I have now seen a Moody 34 cc and the layout is fantastic but what do they sail like and do they hold there price are they hard to come by or any comments any one would like to add good or bad. Thanks for any feed back. cerro

I have friends who have sailed theirs (Moody 346) from Florida to Med and then Atlantic, Pacific, NZ, Oz and are now in Thailand preparing for India and back through the Red Sea. It seems to sail ok!

From what I have seen..... never sailed a 34, so take it in context..... its only observation....

They seem to sail well.... quite close winded...

Heavy build, so robust, but perhaps a bit sluggish in the lighter stuff..

As you say, great layout... very good for a family boat....

Price wise.... yes.... older Moodys tend to be at the higher end of the price range for the size and age of boat, and that has been the case for some time, so they do seem to hold their prices well....

The Moody Excel 34 (if that is what is being discussed) and the 346 are different boats, the Excel 34 is a later design, built by Prout not Marine Projects. To confuse it even more, there was a 34 built in the 1980s, but I think the 346 is a better boat.

There were not many Excel 34s built, so it's difficult to see how well they hold value. The 346 is a nice boat, and Shy_Talk's is an excellent example!

You could also look at a 336 which is very solid, sails very well and holds value if in good condition, but mine is sadly now sold!

I can vouch for the 336's sailing performance - I've got one and was frankly surprised how well it actually does sail - for a mono!

The last 34 (the Prout built ones) always look to me like the epitomy of the floating caravan. High topsides to maximise accomodation. But I've never sailed one.

Don't listen to those suggesting the 336. They are a very expensive and poorer standard copy of the Gib'sea Master 96 IMHO.

The 346 is pretty good for a Moody. Almost as good as a Gib'sea-

Ah, now M35 I do know about as Dad had one for a time. Very, very good sea boat, solid and well built. Aft cabin makes cruising for four adults (or older kids) very comfortable as it offers a good degree of seperation.

Fin keel version sails well and is a good boat in all directions. Cockpit is quite high though, to allow good access for the galley which extends down the side below the cockpit, and as such can feel exposed in a blowm but in reality it is very safe and you will soon get used to it.

IMHO a 35 foot package which is ver very hard to beat. We replaced with the Moody 38, but that's another story...

I have had 2 Moodys a 346 and now a 422 both center cockpits 346 bilge and 422 fin, the 346 I sold 2 years ago for what I paid for it 2 years B/4. The 346. did not have a very large berth in the aft cabin and we could not get on with that.
The 422 is absolutely great, both do not smell of plastic, sail well and are very solid, you notice the difference when it blows a bit, the 422 just shoulders everything aside, the layout of the 34 is very similar, if aft berth is central, then buy it, you will not be disappointed. Gibsea's are really not in the same league!
