And double the price of Rivals it appears which are also strongly built. Why? ?
I've looked at similar boats on Google for the past half hr and I would say some are similar priced for a hand built product and the lessor priced have not the same level of fit and finish, the attention to detail, but I agree they are on the expensive side.

Interesting! Just looked at this article of 5 long keelers from 2013 saying price for,

Rustler 36 were 50-85K
Rival 34 18-28K

2' makes a big difference ?

Your avatar is a rustler ?

No it is a Marieholm International Folkboat (IF Boat @ 26' long) designed by Tord Sunden who created the original Nordic Folkboat. I like little boats that I can tow and keep at home, dock easily single handed, push around in a marina, pick up my mooring buoy by hand without the need for a boat hook as there is only 2' Freeboard. My wife can easily step up onto it with her arthritis from the tender, which is also easy to pull up onboard. I can manage the sails easily etc and have the simplicity to kind of camp inside. Less hassle more fun. It's beauty is what initially hooked me and it is nice to own such a respected boat. I will never fully appreciate it's sailing capabilities as crossing the Solent is a big enough challenge for me BUT my family and i can use it for short hops and one day I would love to be able to have the time to sail to Falmouth and back.

Sadly few people know about IF Boats in the UK, although nearly 4000 have apparently been sold worldwide and you can still buy a new one today... that is more than Tord Sundens original Nordic Folkboat. The UK had the less attractive but roomier Contessa 26 which sold around 300 odd I believe. The Contessa Is heavier with a less favourable ballast ratio. The IF Boat is only 2150 KG with a 58% ballast ratio BUT strongly built. It was designed as a one design racer/ cruiser which is a rare combination. Tord Sunden thought he had designed a prettier boat in the IF over his Nordic Folkboat (debatable I think) It also has a self draining cockpit where the original Folkboat did not, it is better in light airs, roomier inside and can take an inboard engine... they are all plastic however ? I wouldn,t want the work and upkeep costs of a wooden boat.

Apologies for going on about them but it helps to make them better known. They are a cheap, fun alternative which are better known for their racing scene these days. 5-10K will get you a nice one. Sadly I cannot put pictures up on this forum. There is a picture of No1 currently in a museum that was built in 66 and launched in 1967. They stayed in production until 1984 and have quite a following abroad with good presence and support on social media.

Interesting article about them here with specs...

True, but you’ve gotta love that ‘keyhole’ saloon entry on Rivals. Looks great to me.

Funny but I really dislike that, I think they have it on a Contessa 26 (as well as an odd cabin hatch design). It doesn,t look to be much use structurally but I am probably wrong. I much prefer the more open layout of the Rustler.

But all over 29 foot Island Packets are long keel.

All bar our model, the SP Cruiser Motorsailer are cutter rigged.

Four are 2020 models currently available.

So, modern, long keel, cutter rigged.

Go for it!

Ggr is the golden globe race where rustler 36's were a very popular weapon of choice.
Immensely strong built boats with a very comfortable motion and far from slow.

Isn't that the one a chap called Knox-something has just won in a teak sloop? Although to be fair the French hippy chap in his home-built steel hull was well in the lead until he tried to sink a cargo ship off Cape Town with a round from his slingshot...

Careful, you are likely to get a broadside of grapeshot from RKJ if you (incorrectly) suggest Moitessier was “in the lead” when he departed the “race” route. He was in a much faster boat but left later and was well behind Suhali on the water - we will never know if he could have caught Suhali up the Atlantic, but Moitessier was not leading at the time (albeit could have been close call with Nigel Tetley in his trimaran for fastest elapsed time, if Crowhurst’s false positions had not encouraged Tetley to push too hard).

Nothing with a long keel can be described as modern. Design has moved on
How does that statement fit in with a few posts previous stating all island packets are long keeled ? They look pretty modern inside to me.
What's wrong with a rustler 36 ? If they are so out of date why are they still made ?
