I saw a fisherman at Lymington using a big shovel from side to side as a paddle for his tender, maybe they have a competition going on for unusual propulsion, like the bird-men of Bognor ?

In my experience it seems to be the 'older' sailor who stands in his dinghy. I suspect they find it too difficult to get up and down from the thwart.

My old inflatable could be steered to a surprising degree just by leaning. Not tried on the newer one.

same with my 10' rigid tender. In very heavy weather I have crouched in the centre and steered with my weight to avoid getting pooped, but can't reach the throttle, so have to get it right until I get to shelter.
