When we were fitting out there, my sons called it “England’s Monaco”. They were particularly taken with the presence of no only a Musto shop but also a Henri-Lloyd shop.
You forgot the Helly Hansen shop a few doors up from Henri Loyd! It has not survived the covid though and closed about a month ago i suspect forever. The others are still open.

I forgot to say that i used to wear musto but it has long ceased to be waterproof. My next set of waterproofs will be Guy Cotton or something from decathlon.

When we go to Lymington, we often use Berthon Marina.
If there's more than two of you, and you want a shower before going out to dinner and a shower in the morning, £45 isn't too bad.
Sometimes this kind of thing works out cheaper than moorings and water taxi plus harbour office showers.
The boat costs a lot per year. That works out at a lot of fixed cost per weekend whether you use it or not.
A lot of people seem to pay a lot of fixed costs without moaning, even when they don't use the boat much, then moan about costs when they actually go somewhere.
Even if it's just me, what else can I do for £45?
Driving somewhere in the car isn't free, staying overnight anywhere isn't free.

They say Lymington is not on the Isle of Wight, but it's on the way......

When I lived in Lymington we all used to buy Équinoxe gear from Joe the Tent.

Lymington Sail and Tent, now better known as the precursor of Sanders Sails, purveyors of sails to the nobility and gentry.
Ah yes have seen the place down one of the back streets behind Berthon. Did he do foul weather gear of some sort? He is still there.

Peter Sanders is a very grand sailmaker indeed! There is a back door to Sanders Sails if you climb the steps at the side of the Force 4 chandlery - iirc Peter is their landlord. Not the cheapest but definitely the best.

When I was in Lym a couple of weeks ago following advice on this forum I needed some hollow sail rivets and Peter kindly supplied gratis. I have bought sails from him in past but always found him most helpful in being prepared to discuss needs even with the average cruiser.
On topic of charges in the late 70s it cost around £5 per night for a £7k centaur at Berthon as I remember hoping ashore to book 2 berths and the Marino thinking I was joking when I said I would take 2 when he told me the price as a relatively young chap .

It is reassuring to hear of prices are keeping the marine tramps out, who wants to share a harbour with worn out old tubs and their even more worn out owners. Lymington, Yarmouth et al are doing very well are attracting ever increasing numbers of those who actually have money to spend in town beyond a trip to the chippy and the supermarket for some cheap booze to consume back on their boats.

I really hope this was tongue in cheek and not to be taken seriously, if not then I hope it is one that is not to be found in general on the South Coast. It is precisely this sort of attitude that gives Sailing a bad name and the mistaken impression by those who don't sail that the sailing community is made up of of rich 'snotty pillocks'.

My experience also. Peter and his staff are very fine people. And made an awful lot of PPE during the recent excitements.
