Lundy

You have to anchor in the bay at the south east of the island. Its most sheltered there too, persobally I have never made it past the pub once ashore :-)

Sorry, not for me, i would be fine but parents are going via waverly. They don't know the island. Its actually quite a good trip , they sail to ilfracombe, stay overnight then lundy night stop then penarth thursday.

If you were there for a day which side is best for walking/sightseeing wildlife etc?

Louise and I walked all the way around the island two years ago. I'd say we probably saw more wildlife, seals, birds and so on on the East side, as we walked Northwards from the landing stage in the morning.

Personally, though, I found the West side more spectacular which we did after a picnic lunch at the North lighthouse. The cliffs and sea with the sun in the West was unforgettable, and we ended up sitting at the top of the disused lighthouse before going to the pub after sundown.

Hope they're fit

I stayed in one of the Landmark Trust's cottages twice, in the mid 1970s - before the jetty was built and when they still had the old Marisco Tavern.

Lundy is a wonderful place; great scenery, wildlife and extremely peaceful.

BUT, the track from the landing beach to the top of the island is hard going being a 400 foot climb - ok if you are reasonably fit.

I was told
"climb till you thnk your having a heart attack ,then your half way to the pub "

edit Churchyard worth a visit !

Church and churchyard both worth a visit. Disused lighthouse is an absolute must too.

When I went I enjoyed a walk on the 'footpath' on the East side of the Island overlooking the anchorage (of which my boat was the sole occupant). West side is pretty spectacular but not a great footpath.

Anchorage looked like this :-)

Well, I was there in September and I didn't need it then. It may be much warmer at this time of year, but I still don't think you'll need it.
