But wouldn't you need to read all of the posts in all of the threads, so as to decide which needed the scalpel & which needed the blunderbuss?

The 'low resource' way is to ignore the forums (fora?) and only respond to complaints.

Personally, I'm happy to accept the 'reduced service' for free.

That is pretty much my way of thinking too. It's a valuable resource, it's free

Obviously the OP didn’t realise the can of worms that the thread would open. Rather ironic as the OP was the mod who had to can it.

I reckon the listing fees and commission YBW take on all the successfully completed sales arising from the For Sale forum, should comfortably cover the cost of providing these forums, without the need for any access fee.

Cheers, Brian.

Not when people keep trying to get their listings free, by posting "where should I post this boat for sale for best advantage" type of posts, hence getting the advertising for free, which most of us are complicit in....:)

A point that seems to have been overlooked :-
After a lot of complaints advertising was removed (nearly all)from these "fora" hence loss of income,so basically you can't eat your cake and have too .

On another forum that I was once a member, it was moderated by its members (chosen by management privately after time served membership showing common sense postings ) each one was in charge of their own section/s.

Sadly, the lunatics have already overtaken the asylum in this instance, and it is run by a commercial organisation, which may never allow non IPC employees to moderate, as that could legally have huge issues

It could be worked out by 2 stage moderation :-
Total scanning by member-mod and referral to ipc-mod for difficult/legal judgement

Well, the interesting thing about the Internet is that is makes it hard to suppress information. Gone are the days when a small number of interested parties can ensure that the only data released to the public is in their interest. Regardless of how many censors there may be in one location, there are always other locations where the truth leaks out, however much it may be detested by some.

If everyone paid for access, I'm sure they could. How much would you pay for access?

An excellent question.

Personally, I'd be prepared to pay say £50pa, or thereabouts. However I suspect a charge at that level would reduce membership to an excessive extent. So perhaps a figure in the region of £20pa might be reasonable.

What about a combined annual charge of say £50, to give access to the forums AND to all editorial content in PBO, YM and MBM? Or some variation of that general idea?

You missed the point, Brendan, but Snooksie has it. The forum is a valuable resource to IPC. They are able to commercially exploit the discussions as raw material for articles in their magazines - and good luck to them for that.

Graham, I understand that, but I guess at least you take the point, even tho you "couldn't possibly comment!" :D

A good suggestion, it would be perverse to charge us for the content we create; like charging Snooks to look at the photos he takes for IPC

Don't make the mistake of thinking that IPC host this forum out of the kindness of their hearts - our content that we write drives large amounts of traffic to their revenue generating sites. Ask yourselves why the new owners of Classic Boat made it a contractual requirement that the Classic Boat forum went to their site ;)

Every post you make increases the value of these forums to IPC; of course some posts add more value than others...
