[[EDIT - if you scroll down past all the nonsense to post 56 you'll see I've apologised for posting this because I was wrong.]]

A company tells lies. And the truth gets out.

Lots of information of use to boaters, it may even keep them safe. But its getting uncomfortable for the company.

So make a complaint and poof it's gone.

I get the fact that the moderators can't read and edit every thread. Generally they have to be pulled if their is any doubt of illegality.

Sometimes though the information is just too valuable to boaters, and the effort should be made to edit the thread not pull it.

accept massive amounts of advertising, to provide salaries for full time high level mods who can understand finesse

that's the way to edit every thread.

sometimes the information is too important to remove.

In exceptional cases it should be escalated to someone prepared to use an editorial scalpel rather than an editorial blunderbuss.

Just have a look at the multitude of threads about advertising on the forums. The vast majority would reject it.

me too and not what I'm suggesting.

I'm OK with the fact that some get pulled. Some need more finesse.
That doesn't need extra resource just sensible escalation where appropriate.

The mods have made it very clear, they don't have the time nor resources, to do the fine dicing of removing individual posts. It is very time consuming, so I can understand their issue. Not just in reading the whole and related threads, but understanding the legal issues of each and every post in the thread. I know Kim used to complain about the issue, and he was a full on moderator, on these forums all hours of day and night, and things were a lot quieter then, and I used to read every post - I can't do that now, nor can any moderator on here. They have to resort to blunt instruments.

you are being particularly belligerent this evening Brendon. I don't think you are missing the point therefore I just completely disagree with you.

99% of the time they can just delete them and cause only minor frustration. Sometimes, they just need to escalate the issue.

It is only a resource problem to do it all the time. Quite obviously.

There is a recent pulled thread that in my opinion deserved to be escalated. That in my mind is quite obvious too.

I'm not being belligerent, I have had a lot of conversations with previous mods about this subject, and I was explaining the issues involved, though abbreviated.. Who do they escalate to? Legal? That takes time and money
I'm talking about the actualities of doing the job

Yep. Time and money. But very little if it is exceptional, which is all I'm suggesting.

The whole forum costs time and money. Lots of it.
It must be considered to be worth it. Must be or they'd shut it down.

I believe that they have wasted some of that money, taken a step back in the value they receive from the forum, by not targeting a tiny bit of extra resource.

I think you're confusing cost with value.
Though if no one is bothered that it's gone, I'm wrong.

I'll be happy to have a long talk about what is involved in reality, over a pint or several. I get the feeling you aren't going to be swayed by a few summarised points on the forums.

I was thinking exactly the same thing :)
In the meantime, you'll just have to trust me, and that I have a fair idea. I've been around these forums a long time, talked to previous mods and had a good idea of what was going on behind the scenes. My current job is very similar, swan gliding, and lots going on underneath

But wouldn't you need to read all of the posts in all of the threads, so as to decide which needed the scalpel & which needed the blunderbuss?

The 'low resource' way is to ignore the forums (fora?) and only respond to complaints.

Personally, I'm happy to accept the 'reduced service' for free.
