I hesitate to speak for another, especially someone that doesn't spell correctly, but Phoenix does not claim that only ABC1s are interested in sailing. What Phoenix presumably does mean is that there's a much higher proportion of ABC1s in the sailing fraternity than in the population at large.

I'd agree with that. Do you dispute it?

How would you be able to prove it?

Are you just talking 'yachties', or include MoBo's & dinghies?
Do you simply include 'owners' with boats valued above a particular point?
Do you exclude those who sail as crew, but do not own?

"but Phoenix does not claim that only ABC1s are interested in sailing. What Phoenix presumably does mean is that there's a much higher proportion of ABC1s in the sailing fraternity than in the population at large."

I have met people from A-E demographics whilst sailing, so cannot understand how any supposition as made above, can possibly hold water.

Alant;

It might be a good time to stop digging. My experience is that most boating people are better off than me (but not all) and, while a pensioner I am not impoverished. So my experience is that around 60% of boaters are probably ABC1's. This is also borne out by posts & threads on these fora. And we are talking IPC's audience.

Have YOU any specific data to disprove our perceptions, or can you offer your own reasoning?

I didn't make the original statement about ABC1's, so its not for me to disprove your "perceptions" (or guesswork). Such sweeping statements are valueless.

Anyway Searush, pls advise which category, as a 'pensioner', you are in this list -

"social grade social status occupation
A upper middle class higher managerial, administrative or professional
B middle class intermediate managerial, administrative or professional
C1 lower middle class supervisory or clerical, junior managerial, administrative or professional"

Approximately 55% of the population.

As you can see, its occupation driven, NOT how much you are worth, or what you once were!

I bet the forum owners could shed light on the demographics.
I'm with the ABC1 guessers.

I'm only a proletariat wage-slave so I can pay for my boat, 'tho in the age of "knowledge workers" I *do* "own the means of production" (and take them home every night in my cranium)...

I'm not sure I want to waste much time on this, but I'll try once more.

I didn't claim to be ABC1, I used to be A, but as you rightly say I am now retired which is why I said "most are better off than me". You say 55% of population are ABC1, seems high, but fine, I estimated (call it a guess if you like, but it is an educated/ reasoned one) 60% of boat owners which holds with the higher proportion of ABC1's being boat owners. So you have simply agreed with our point while trying to personally rubbish my understanding of the issues. Incidentally the concept of banding people in job categories is intended as a way banding their income level, I'd have thought you knew that.

Anyway, well done, thank you & good bye.

Not trying to rubbish your so called "understanding", which however, you did try to reciprocate with - "I'd have thought you knew that"!

But, do tell more, how you arrived at your 60%?

Got my 55% off here (not guesswork/perception:p).

Don't know if these are valid, but at least they come from somewhere more scientific than a guess.
