Bon Voyage!

I suppose the rest of the trip is about taking the rough with the smooth.

512 miles

average speed 4.1 knots

time moving 125 hours

max speed 14.7 knots - falling off a wave some-where

http://www.keepturningleft.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/SANY0272.jpg

the last couple of days have been a bit gnarly with the north east - weather man said six but felt more

boat never once felt over-pressed

also most harbours up here are untenable in the strong NE

the entrance to Anstruther was frightening only because I knew there were lobster pots all round the leading line

Are you planning on doing the Moray coast at a later date in Katie L? Not that I've sailed it myself but it seems to have plenty of nice wee harbours as you go round the corner and along the north Moray coast.

the Moray coast looks wonderful

Once swmbo arrives then I will no longer be in charge

so apart from weather and tide based vetoes on plans then my role will be to fulfill the desires of the majority

so if they want to push onto Orkney and beyond we will do that, if they want to spend time around the sand harbours on the north shore of the Moray then that will be getting my vote

my plan is to do an overnighter from Anstruther to Inverness leaving here Tuesday or weds

Jumbleduck has tentativley offered to come with me

room for one more if anyone fancies taking a two hour turn in the cockpit at night - if not then it will be coffee/proplus

I am also after soemwhere to dump the car near Inverness.... wondered if anyone would have space on their drive for the Polo for a few weeks

Anstruther to Inverness in one hit?

What happened to keep turning left? Missing out the TAY that I would have thought was just the sort of place you love exploring? And all the NE harbours along the way.

I didn't expect you to get to the inner Moray Firth for another year, given the extreme detail of all the places you normally explore.

Must arrange to meet up when you get here, come and visit us in Fortrose, lots of places you will love when you get here. Unless you are in a mad dash to just wiz past to get to Orkney? Visitor moorings at Fortrose are a lot cheaper than Inverness marina.

Pretty carp weather here at the moment, cold, low cloud and drizzle. Summer departed a week ago and we are stuck in the autumn like miserable stuff.

Cheers Dave,

Bleieve me I intend to thoroughly explore the whole area in Katie L next year but this summer there are young people on board so spending time sat on mud banks is not going to cut the mustard so I will cherry pick the places. They look at the map and see orkney or Shetland and they want to go there

But what we achieve this summer is in the lap opf the weather gods.

So worry not, I plan to do the Scottish East Coast justice

the Firth of Forth has so many great places to sail - as varied as the solent but no-where near as crouded.

Roger and Jon caught the 10.30 bus towards Edinburgh. Roger is going to fly home, Jon is going to catch the train. The plane is cheaper than the train but Jon regards aeroplanes as dangerous places to be.

I was amazed that they did not book the tickets in advance on the web using the laptop but their heads are still in that freewheeling style.

I am now deep cleaning the boat. Three blokes have been living and working the boat for seven days – that is equivalent to me being on here for 21 days. During the trip I cleaned the floor, around the sink and the bog (the latter is an ongoing thing as that is my job to keep the loo fragrant. Pretty hard work too.

I have been through three of the keel-bolt location lockers that tend to be on the damp side – especially after sailing in fairly rough conditions. The diesel engine is also smelling a bit – diesel is awful stuff the way that it can creep around. Nearly as bad as paraffin.

Harmony has very shallow bilges so anything from the engine slides down into the bilges under the cusions. Now the plug to keep bilge water from the engine separate from bilge water from the weeping keels.

incidentally, just as Gordon said, the keels will weep in big seas but not when the boat is at rest. He was dead right. So once after a lonmg passage you can clean and dry the underberth lockers and they willmore or less stay dry. However, they will never be completely dry.

Drying our foulies after the rough sail meant that thye fan heater was blowing into the wet locker for most of the past 24 hours – but I think it is all dry now.

I am planning to leave Anstruther at about 11 Tuesday and then head around to Inverness.

83 miles from here to Peterhead and 90 miles from Peterhead to Inverness

so I do need to start heading that way as the family are coming up Thursday night.

The Centaur as a sea boat has been wonderful. She never felt over-powered by anything and we did have it fairly rough after leaving Scarborough. However, strong winds mean fast passage times to I shall be seeking out those force fours. The weather reports were okay on force but have been way out on direction changes and when they were due to arrive.

The long fetch through lumpy seas from Scarborough to St Abbs was, I confess a bit of a slog. Having three blokes on board made it possible to keep goinjg. One person alone would have exhausted himself.

In Katie L I would still be cowering in scarborough another two days

I am as confident in the boat as a man can be – my onloy fear is Lobster pots and engine trouble.

Five people on board will be an interesting excercise – but we will only be day sailing apart from the one overnighter up to Shetland.

As you know I am not really used to sailing with other people so it is has been fascinating to have Jon and Roger aboard. jon is an old school friend and we know each other better than our wives. Roger had to fit in with two old blokes. He said we reminded him of the muppets men

Life could not be better. The only thing I lack is two folding bikes… Dahon press people said they are a bit busy at the moment to bother with a Yachting Monthly long term Bike test - bumma

depends

How long are you planning on staying in Inverness for before flipping a coin and heading off somewhere?

depends on the weather and how tired they are after driving from Oxford

they might need a leg stretching day

my plan is to go up along the north coast of the Moray, stopping where appropriate, then to Orkney.. so probaly only one night in Inverness, max two

There aren't so many places to stop along there. There's really only Golspie, Brora, Helmsdale, possibly Dunbeath, Wick, possibly JOG as well?

six places in 190 miles sounds pretty good to me

Golspie looks lovely

drying out in a sand harbour overnight should be entertaining for the youngsters

any specific suggestions gratefully received

links of snaps of the place would be great too

There's also Lybster http://www.ports.org.uk/port.asp?id=579

and JOG http://www.ports.org.uk/port.asp?id=537

There are a few others some look a bit interesting / difficult to get into http://www.ports.org.uk/area.asp?area=54

I would have thought you would have been using that site a lot to seek out all the known harbours along the way to explore. and I'm sure in due course you will explore them all.
