Hi All,

Following on from my search for a new boat, I have found a boat that suits our needs but I have come across an oil leak on the engine that I wanted some help identifying. I have tried attaching a picture. the engine is a Volvo Penta Kad 43. I will arrange for an engine test but before I do I wanted to see if anyone had the same problem. It appears to be coming from the Valve Cover. I'm guessing it's the gasket. Screenshot_20200711_210240.jpg

Thanks

Daz

Not sure how practical you are but if it’s the gasket then a tiny job (unlike the KAD 44 etc) if you are asking the owner to sort it have the tappets adjusted at the same time.
Thanks for the reply. We are going to see what the volvo guys say when they have a look. I was just curious whether anyone else had this before. Hopefully it's just the gasket.

That was the strange one to us as there is an extensive paper trail with the boat of servicing and work done. All being well we should have some answers tomorrow. I will keep you posted

A simple job although you do have to take the injector pipes off which requires the oil filter housing , fuel filter and pipes , pretty much as per the 44 and 300 as the pipes cross the valve cover .
As ever the boat design dictates how easy the job will be .

Thanks for that. I think I will leave it to the professionals.

He means the entire valve cover which is where it appears to be leaking under, the valves only require the 3 lids taking off. So you are both right.

I hesitate to challenge volvopaul but when I did my KAD 43 tappets I didn’t have to take the injector pipes off.
You are quite right to challenge me , your talking tappe which are done through removing the 3 top covers , the gasket in question is the one between the main valve cover body and the head , the injector pipes pass over it.

From you vast knowledge of these engines what would your verdict be looking at the picture?

Hopefully buying. I am having an engine test on it but don't want to waste the money if its something more serious. Its more for piece of mind before the engine test

Your engineer will advise on what is required , I do many pre purchase inspections and advise on what action and costs is required to rectify faults found , make sure he knows the product well . A general surveyor will only look at basic items on an engine.
