I would not fault people for using genuine parts
I must admit there seems to be not much in it financially in the longer term if the more expensive impellers last proportionately longer.
But if you change the impellers annually as a matter of course I would suggest the cheaper impellers are worth considering.

I once used non OEM impeller on my KAD engines and they didn't like them. Put back in the old OEM and no problem. For this 'trial and error', I stick with OEM impellers (as I do most items), but would be interested to hear peoples opinions / experiences.

The price gap difference between OEM and knock-offs does seem to be closing ?
Always change mine after 300 hours or two seasons.
Only failure was after changing a impellor ( Genuine VP, previous owner left it on boat ) forgot to reopen seacock. It did manage to stay intact for around 3/4 of an hour before totally disintegrating and the alarms going off.

Impellor reassembled using instant grab glue in an attempt to find out how many bits were still hiding inside engine.
Reclaimed all the big bits and about 95% of the little ones :)


The impellor sits on the office shelf as constant reminder along with some broken gearbox bits and a couple of other Aide-mémoire .

I am swaying to oem as I said in #9 the original one I had in for 6 years and don't know when previous owner fitted it or if it was the original one since 2005 and the boat has done 375hrs then I think its a no brainer.
so if the cost is £60 +/- over six years + then it is pennies per week.

IF it was was like mine 6 years +.
I did inspect it 3 years ago when I changed the rear seal on the impeller pump and found it to OK hence putting it back in.

I think lack of use is probably what kills them.
I believe the VP recommendation is to change impellers annually?

I use Orbitrade from ASAP supplies in mine. I take the impeller out when I winterise the engine and put a new one in before launch in the spring, keeping the used one as a spare. No problems so far.

Cost of an impellor of whatever ever flavour, the ease of changing it at your own convenience , usually with a cup of tea and a natter with nearbye boaters, compared with the thousands and thousands of pounds of damage which could be caused to your engine( and possibly a few months ) lost boating is not worth thinking about ?
Any impellor that on removal and inspection has developed a "set" to the blades, at best, needs to be binned or added to your emergency only box ?
You cannot fill a car fuel tank for £60.00 quid and its gone in few days and as for buying round of drinks any pub bar ,its 60 seconds .

@oldgit - I totally agree but if jabsco like in @gordmac 's situation is the pump then they maybe Volvo's supplier of impellers.
But so far I am swayed with oem as mine has done very well for 6+ years.

Neoprene for raw water.
nitrile is much harder , wears out quicker, distorts quickly, cracks quickly and wrecks very quickly if run dry.
nitrile is oil resistant which in my opinion is a useless quality for a raw water pump.

neoprene tends to be much cheaper and is far superior, will last 5 years in leisure application compared with a season with nitrile that even if never used will distort and crack in the housing.

it’s a long time since I owned VP but back then VP supplied nitrile as standard , throw away the nitrile and install neoprene

As @gordmac has said his pump is made by jabsco so in his situation you would think that the impeller for that pump is also made by jabsco.
No idea who made the pump, the impeller is Jabsco. I suspect the pumps tend to be Volvo specific, I understand you can no longer get pumps for at least some of the KAD engines. If they were a generic pump I don't think they would be unavailable.
