Hi - I am going to buy some replacement impellers as I have just swapped out my current one and would always like to carry spares in the event of overheating in the middle of nowhere
I have seen some aftermarket ones at £18 at repower marine and Volvo oem at £62 onwards.
What is the general consensus go with the oem or aftermarket ? has anyone used aftermarket impellers.
many thanks for any opinions
Jon

I have used the cheaper impellers over the last two years .
One was replaced after one year due to a split starting in one vane.
The second impeller has done two years and was replaced just now. It was intact but in bad shape with serious splits in the vanes.
A jabsco impeller had done two years and was replaced just now . It was intact with some splitting in the vanes.

I conclude the Jabsco impellers are more durable but the cheaper impellers are fine if you are in the habit of replacing them annually.

The cheaper impellers I have used were CEF brand

Many thanks @DavidJ and @MartynG
I only changed my impeller after 6 years and don't know how long the previous owner had it in - this was a volvo oem and the one I changed for was also a volvo oem.
So after the replies I think in this case I will stick to Volvo's oem impeller as a spare.
Thanks for your replies
Jon

How on earth can Vovlo justify being 3 times the price of the Jabsco alternative even if it is a different compound.
I think its again to Volvo adding to their profit like most parts on any brand engine - The main manufacturer in this case Volvo get another company's product and rebox /package it up as if it was their own

Thank You Davidj - I have found a brand new Jabsco one in the depths of my boat Profile Y part number 17937-001-P looks identical in size but has 10 blades and is listed as a volvo replacement dont know if this would work on mine ?

Have used both the multi vane impellors and the more sparsely populated blade versions.
Sweet fanny adams difference in cooling but the multi blade seems more fragile regards blade thickness.Personally prefer the lower blade count with thicker blades.

Thanks oldgit - good point on the strength factor.

I did look at the jabsco pdf on the troubleshooting and it says on a normal worn impeller you can turn it around as the blades have only worn on one side

I once used non OEM impeller on my KAD engines and they didn't like them. Put back in the old OEM and no problem. For this 'trial and error', I stick with OEM impellers (as I do most items), but would be interested to hear peoples opinions / experiences.
