My old Dad used to say that as long as you were present at the conception that was enough

The launch is considerably more memorable than the laying of the keel. Not to be missed. I hope you remembered the coin?

Of course, you have to be there!!!

I'm sure that Mummysailbadtobe wouldn't mind if we all came up to give you moral and liquid support. She wouldn't be in labour long with all of us in the delivery room giving her encouragement and plying you with Guinness. It would be a simple PUUUSH, Plop, Kiss from all of us (no tongues Jimi) and then off down to the pub to wet it's head.

You know she'll thank you for it. /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Done it twice, first time took nearly three days.I was getting bored after the first 3 hours, fell asleep for the next 6. Went home for the next 24. Went down the pub for a couple of hours then went back to take station and keep watch.
A little tip. Don't hold 'em for the first 15 mins after launching. When they rev the engine they tend to clear the exhaust pipe in that time. Can get quite messy if your not wearing wet weather gear.

Second one was dead easy 4 hours from start of launch to getting the engine running. Don't look though....well not too closely! Theres nothing like experiencing a good launching though. Its the maintanance that gets expensive.

Our second was quick too. Yard foreman came in, decided it was all too slow and sliced thru' the strops. No messing.

What is the scheduled launch date? I witnessed a launch in January this year. The anticipation of the event is worse than actually being there.

The advice to avoid the first noxious exaust fumes is well founded, otherwise you will find that for the first few weeks the new vessel does not do very much apart from lie in its berth and take on fuel on a fairly regular basis. An alarm will sound when it is low on fuel and needing to take on more.

There are two possible sources of fuel, it can be delivered direct from a special nozzle supplied by the builder or it can be transferred in special containers which also allows synthetic fuels to be used. In the later case, the cleanliness of the fuel and the containers is vital, since bugs in the fuel can be very harmful to the new boat's engine and can even cause misfiring. We now own a hi tech fuel container cleaner, unfortunately it broke down this morning and I had to repair it before I went to work.

Good luck with the launch hope it goes smoothly. Who knows, within a year or two you could be busy laying another keel and building another boat.

If you mean this year's boatshow in January, then the build has been remarakably fast from keel laying to launch!!!! I don't think I can ever recall a new boat being built this quickly.

Re: Take back issues of YM to read

mm i was planning on being in the pub with a hotline open so i can get a cab there when the deed is done
as far as i am concerened it is not a spectator sport and no place for a gibbering wreck
my cousin's husband attended and he collapsed during the labour and was released from hospital after the mother and baby.

launch due ocotober so early days to be fair but she's a strong girl and should not have any problems. she'll be back at work in a couple of days i am sure.

Re: Modern Man

Was present at the launch of my three vessels. In fact for the last, I handled the launch myself aided by 9 yr old sister vessel who had to cut through the mooring rope after I had tied the two preventers...

it was my intention to have nothing to do with the model until it is well in commission and available for sea trials at local sailing club after say four years.

the launch process i nothing to do with me
i have spoken to the surveyor and been assured my attendance is not compulsory but may be wise to be there
i will have to check the local forecast but if it looks bad i may be in the pub

fuelling will be taken care of by the builder
altho i must confess i will inspect the fuel berths regularly
my biggest worry at this time is noises are are already being made about a suitable marina
we have a facility but apparently it needs altering
when i enquired about running costs the builder has gone very quiet and refuses to provide a quote
