I see there are a number of sellers offering the same thing, although I think £52 was the cheapest I saw - others up to about £65.

I think I shall try messaging some of them over the weekend.

Commonly in Denmark. Dizzy Too, most of the time.

You can't transfer the app to a plotter - it takes separate licenses and update subscriptions.
It always was like this, even after Garmin aquired Navionics, but you never know how they decide to merge products in the future.

Before deciding you might want to check getorca.com, who have closed the gap between apps and NMEA.

Actually links tablet/mobile to the NMEA devices onboard, including autopilot etc.
Run their own charts and has (fast!) autorouting and more.
Less expensive than a plotter, esp. if you have a decent tablet already.

Despite not full blown, their demo gives you a chance to evaluate before deciding.

Their "Orca Owners' Club" is on Facebook and seems quite active. It is accessible even for non FB members (I noted..)

Here's the Link

The seller assures me the charts are up to date (2023) and compatible with my Raymarine.

What's the catch?

Thanks!

The catch is that the card expired Jan 2023 "and cannot be updated". This means that the card has been used to register a new update card, which then locks this card*. As the update cards are typically about £110 with a years subscription the seller is trying to get half their new subscription cost back. Nothing wrong with that if you are happy to have a locked card.

*Edit - a locked (or retired) card cannot be used to buy a further subscription or used to register an update card.

I don't think its wrong ... Navionics have created a system that prevents the card from affecting their registered service ...

The seller makes it obvious that it is locked and therefore being 'honest'.

How different is this than a person who decides to NOT update card and pay 110 quid or whatever ... keeps using the expired card ? Must be many out there who do just that.
Similarly - the Navionics charts on Android / IOS apps ... if a person decides to not renew sub ... he keeps the old to use ... OK - he cannot transfer the charts - but that's a different matter anyway.

Indeed the seller makes it clear as I pointed out. I do not think it is wrong at all and did not suggest so, or that the seller was being dishonest. I was just explaining the "catch" (the OPs term) of an expired card and how the Navionics plotter card update system works as that did not seem to be clear to the OP. I will probably even sell old cards myself at some point.

Yup I also use expired cards. When I update I use the new "update" cards and my expired (retired) ones to get greater coverage by using the facility to update to a different area - so I actually update alternatively between UK and Western Europe (both cover the English Channel) and therefore have both these areas, one on a recent (and not retired) card, the other no more that 2/3 years out of date. The important thing if you are going to pay the cost is to buy the "update" cards and not just overwrite your existing card with a new subscription which costs the same, that way you can build up areas or have old cards to sell! BTW, I have a Raymarine Es plotter that takes micro SD cards, but the first card in my update chain was a CF from my C70 as Navionics allows you to transfer between formats when activating a new update.

Cheers.

I wasn't implying anything about your post - just agreeinjg with it.

I have old charts and still use alongside new.

Sorry, what's an update card, please?

Previously I have paid £200 for a complete set of charts on microSD, and not bothered updating them. I think both cards are now more than 3 years old. I guess they're now to old to update anyway?

What's the difference between a regular card full of charts for which I pay £200 and an update card, please?

Navionics always offer 1/2 price updates so you only pay full price initially, or buy with discount offers at boat shows etc. you can either update online and use the same card or they will send you a new one and you keep the old one as said as either backup or sell on, this one cannot be updated further or used to get another with 1/2 price discount.

Just to add, you need both live subscriptions on app and plotter card to allow app routes to be shared to plotter. This I use a lot as passage planning at home and then just transfer to plotter when on boat.

How do you transfer then - suppose your app device isn't NMEA?

In fact you can transfer as GPX file from any charting program ... some plotters will require a conversion from GPX ... easily done by such as GPSUtility or other ... just copy the file onto a card and install on plotter etc.

It is not essential to have any connection or dual subs etc.

Understand using GPX but this requires swapping cards about and if not using PC not as straightforward, using Navionics plotter sync option is easier for me. Just use wifi on both iPad and plotter no need for NMEA

From the description these cards seem to be the same as those that @st599 linked before - £220 from MarineSuperstore.

Am I correct in understanding that these are discounted because they'll receive no further updates? If so I will be ordering a set of the Med for myself.

They'll be pirate copies, that's why there will be no updates.

I don't think this is correct, he's already sold at least 16 of these and has more for sale.
