In answer to your question, it probably wouldn't float, but I am guessing as usual.

The owner might want to get a sub-aqua type person to shove something in the hole until he is ready to put the rudder back in.

If your question is not just hypothetical, and you know somebody who plans to try it, please let me know where and when so I can bring my camera.

Re: How big\'s the hole ..

Think it would float as the top of the stern tube is well above the waterline. The issue would be the bottom bearing and how it is fitted. Until I get the instructions I ain'nt got a clue if it can be done underwater. Was'nt going to lift this year as the hull is clean, the anode sound and the antifoul still there. Problem at Hythe at the moment is that there is no room on the hard for more boats..... so get back in the water Nick!

Getting back in

Would have gone back in on Monday if I had finished my hull polishing last weekend. The weather was so dry but I was afflicted with the dreaded lurgy and likely to end up with pneumonia.

Hopefully this weekend ...

Apparently the recommendation is to put a couple of heavyweights on the foredeck to raise the stern. Any volunteers.....?

Re: How big\'s the hole ..

another option would be to attache the spinnaker halyard to a low level cleat and winch in hard. Anybody tried that?

My worry would be that if I attached the main halyard and the spiine one to separate cleats. Ground them in hard and just as I was refitting the rudder the main halyard was cut by a Mobo yob. Consequently the boat would snap upright projecting the pontoon to which the spinne is a attached like a slingshot into downtown Southampton. Now would I or the Mobo yob be liable for the carnage?

If everything was ready, it could probably be done whilst still in the strops for a couple of hours?

Re: How big\'s the hole ..

If its any help we changed lower rudder bearing on our 28i last year. Firstly, no it will not sink, the rudder tube is high enough to keep water out. however good a seal there is around the rudder stock it would never be enough to keep all the water out on its own.

Changing lower bearing still in the water is a non starter. Our rudder stock is stainless steel and solid, the rudder and stock is bloody heavy, it would rest nicely on the bottom of the marina. You cannot get the rudder out in a cradle either as (unless you dig a deep hole) there is no clearance below.

So the only way forward is to get the yard to hold the boat in slings, change the bearing, get the rudder back in, job done about a hour start to finish. We got the yard to lift us last boat before lunch so we were ready to go in straight afterwards, that way we did not delay the launching timetable.

Re: How big\'s the hole ..

I'd prefer the boat out of the water to do this job, jacked up high enough to give clearance to rudder and shaft or else dig a pit under the rudder.

Since she doesn't have to come out for any other work an alternative might be to let her dry out nose-down alongside if she'll sit like this as I'm sure the job must be possible between tides. I'd get as much as possible disconnected whilst waiting for the water to go.

Yes, clearly three years is not a "reasonable" period of time for that useage. Definitely a result to be had here. Also look for later boats with modified materials/construction. This will indicate makers' knowledge.
