Is it possible to heat water from a small sea water cooled engine, if so how? How much could I heat and what about a 240v heater when in a marina?

have a friend with a sea water cooled bukh in a sadler, and that was fitted with a calorifier from new. seems to work ok, but it surprises me since the thermostat of sea water cooled engines is held down to something like 60deg to avoid salt cristalising out in the block. you would need to check out the tubing in the calorifier to make sure that it wouldnt corrode away in hot sea water. same applies to the immersion heater

personally, i use one of those gas powered water heaters. its excellent, gives hot water on demand without running the engine, and doesnt seem to use a lot of gas. its also cheaper and lighter.

Calorifier operation from a seawater cooled Bukh is done by circulating water from the top of the block and returning it to the bottom, using a small electric pump. Works very well, although the maximum temperature is a little lower than could be achieved with a fresh-water cooled system. My calorifier has copper tubes that are now 18 years old, no evident corrosion.

The same arrangement is possible with a Yanmar, they do a kit for this, but I know nothing about it.

I understand that raw water cooled Volvos pass the cooling water from the block through the calorifier before spiking it into the exhaust. This is a most inferior method because this water flow also contains unheated bypass water.

try asap supplies. i converted a yanmar 2gm to freshwater cooling using a 'martec' kit supplied by asap. later bought calorifier with electric immersion heater from them as well. can't remember what martec kit cost but calorifier, immersion heater and all the bits of heater tubing etc came to about £150 ish.
calorifier holds about 5 gallons, is hand hot after running engine for about 30 mins and very hot if using the immersion heater for about 15mins. worth every penny, especially at this time of the year when you can get washed in hot water!
ps. they had a special offer on on calorifiers not so long ago.

which was my reply if engine was gm range,
i have a martec as well ,no problems except the temp alarm switch was the wrong range so it wouldnt have gone off till the engine was a steam iron !

the kit makes the engine run better as well !

We have 2 gm with Martec and it works well.
Do you get engine overheat if you run at full load for more than 15 mins.
At 3/4 setting no probs engine temp at about 80 degs, but at full throttle engine gets up to about 90+ degs?

if you want hot water from a raw water cooled GM you will have a problem. you can of course go the route of a fresh water conversion but you may like me not be able/want to do that.

the problem is that if you take water from the pipe which links the block to the exhaust manifold the hot water from the block is mixed with cold water direct from the pump. we tried it and got only warm water in the calorifier. i believe you could get the effect by interrupting the cold water bypass pipe and re-injecting the cold water after the calorifier. i will be experimenting with that this winter.

if you want to try that approach, pm me your email address and i'll send you a diagram.

Consider an Eberspächer

Why not go for an Espar's Hydronic water heater.

This will heat your water tank and run a few radiators.

It is the way I might go in the future.

Mine works fine under all conditions, i have had to put a blower into the compartment though as the alternator gets hot and raises the temp to about 83.
after putting the blower on it stays around 75 which is about right.
have you tried yours with the compartment open ?
also check the right angle hose from the bottom of the header tank and make sure the corner isnt pushed slightly flat.
you do need to be running antifreeze at 50%
