Wasn't red the non-setting version and gold set hard? Think I have still got a tube of red in my toolbox somewhere.
Red was non-setting, green was setting. Never heard of gold but there again, I was playing with my BSA Bantam Major in the early 60's and progressed to Hylomar (blue) after that!

I recommend Hylomar which is a product sold under licence from Rolls Royce and if it is good enough for them . . . . ;)

I've just bought a tube ebay. £20. I thinks it's the last one. Its still soft to feel through the tube. I'm rebuilding a sillette sonic cat drive leg Mk1. Going to use it to seal the skeg back together. Hopefully 1000009264.jpg

I used to race a classic Triton motorcycle many years ago for sealing the crank cases a builders silicone sealant. It was not any old sealant and I can not remember what one it was what I do remember is in the description it was tolerant of high temperatures.

Thanks snowbird . I was really just saying I was amazed to find this tube on ebay .it must be the last one in this condition. As they stopped making this in the 80s .
I went to use a tube of instant gasket the other day, although it felt squidgy, I found the tube was 80% solid rubber and 20% 'air' (maybe some other gas!), the tube was un-opened but a few years old.
A last minute dash to the local motor spares place to pay twice the on line price.....

The original Red Hermetite was not a silicone rubber, it was more like thick varnish with red powder in it, it would settle like paint over time. I still have an inherited tube of Calor Tite gas joint compound which is quite similar to Red Hermetite. As in, disgusting messy stuff, usually found in (and around) a tube stuck to the inside of a toolbox.
