Hell, I wouldn't use a any or all of our three bow cleats on the Centurion for a tow in those conditions, let alone on a 40.7 (or a Bavaria come to that). Either a bridle around the winches or something around our mast (but out mast is keel stepped), probably both.

Right, you're an engineer, I'm not. Is there a design of boat out there, or a way of designing a boat, where bow cleats could be trusted to this sort of work?

A full on Samson post that was attached to the deck and the keelson perhaps?

That's what I meant - the load would be split over at least 6 points ...

It's a Bav - only got 4 winches ... 2 sheets and 2 halyards/control lines ... the primary winches ARE the sheet winches ...

Don't you start! It's a 40.7 which to my recollection has four winches, two on the coach roof, primaries for sheets/guys and secondarys for kite sheets.

No, I'm not sure I would on the 40.7, I was thinking what we would do on Phoebe. Though ofcourse I like to think that, if I may paraphrase an old COrnish expression, I wouldn't start from 'ere because I'd have pissed off into the nearest safe harbour as soon as there was a force eight in the forecast.

Before McFrame points it out for me though, I have had a tow from a lifeboat when I had my Feeling (equally badly built) and I used the bow cleat on advice from the lifeboatman. It was a windless day although we were going to go through a slight overfall. My thinking on that occasion was that the experienced guy was happy with it and if it sprung from the deck, twenty feet from my crew, it would do far less damage than if the bridle went wrong around a sheet winch or the mast.

Can some one please explain to me when Bavaria made a 40.7???

I've been in the trade many years and never heard of one.....

I've heard of a Bene 40.7..... Maybe it's just me, but get the feeling that people are posting without really thinking.... However, he was a real muppet, to set out with that forecast, and I do hope, that he gets punished by the relevant authorities...

How about coming back from the forward cleats to the chain plates... mine are thru deck bolted to some big bits.... and then as well running lines from the plates to the genoa winches....

That would spread the load pretty well....
 
So they'd identified Brighton, Eastbourne and Dover as ports of refuge. I wouldn't fancy entering any of them in an SW gale (or worse).

Nor me, Calais or Boulogne would have been favourite, but decision would have to have been made quite early.

I was on the boat as crew and I am astounded by all the inaccuracies in Hotliquid's statement. Other than the skipper I was the most experienced with dayskipper certification but I made it clear to the skipper that I hard scarcely sailed in the last 3 years. The crew member who was injured on the helm passed day skipper 3 weeks ago and the others were competant crew with little experience.
The timings are all wrong and most of us were too ill to function by midnight. I could go on and on, but will now give a full account to the MAIB.

when i first saw the post i immediately thought "Boulogne " but they would have to cross the TSS i those conditions, but certainly the best option to get into safely unaided
