A Bavaria's cleats are not significantly fastened down either - in a tow situation there would be a bridle between the two front cleats and lines coming back to the mid cleats before directed to the sheet winches ...

-- DUH? BOW CLEATS NOT PROPERLY DESIGNED AND/or BACKED TO TAKE MAXIMUM TOWLOAD WITHOUT PULLING CLEAT THRU THE DECK ??

That's what I meant - the load would be split over at least 6 points ...Either a bridle around the winches or something around our mast (but out mast is keel stepped), probably both.
It's a Bav - only got 4 winches ... 2 sheets and 2 halyards/control lines ... the primary winches ARE the sheet winches ...

Sorry - I was referring to mine ...which is ...
So they'd identified Brighton, Eastbourne and Dover as ports of refuge. I wouldn't fancy entering any of them in an SW gale (or worse).
Nor me, Calais or Boulogne would have been favourite, but decision would have to have been made quite early.
Lee shore and safe haven, oxymoron?
