I was one of the crew and that's exactly what happened. The wheel was bent double and we had no steerage until much later when it got straightened. We were in trouble way before that happened though. I was terrified as were all the others. We had 20 hours at sea most of which was terrible.

I am really sorry to hear that this happened to you guys.

Did you have any indication from the company that the condition might be as bad as they were?

Did you have a talk before departure about the weather?

If its any consellation your experience was NOT what its normally like... and I am sure that there are lots of folks about who would be happy to take you out and show you how its supposed to be!

I dont know how experienced you are... hopefully this will not put you or your fellow crew off.

PS; I would ask for my money back....

There has been a lot of conjecture and comment so far, but all based on the press reports, the RNLI report and video, and the previous history of the company.

Would you share your exepriences and thoughts in more detail with us all?

And BTW sailing shouldn't be terrifying.

On BBC I player the skipper's name is given as Charlie Sturrock.

Firstly, doesn'the live up to his first name?
Secondly, the only Charlie Sturrock I can find on Facebook search throws up someone ...

That's because the skipper's name is Charlie Borg...

RYA sailing school offering the full range of RYA practical and shore based theory sailing courses from Southampton in the Solent.

Maybe about time the RYA withdrew their accreditation.

Incidents like this ''should'' not happen this day & age.

Glad you are okay. However, we only have your word, an invisible avatar, that you were the crew. It would be easy for someone to come on here and add fuel to to fire. Just playing devils advocate.

It may be better to keep your statements for any investigation. I would also recommend that you contact the RYA. If you were on an RYA course then they will investigate injury on RYA courses. I am not sure what they do if it's not an RYA course.

All the best and sailing is a great activity if carried out responsibly. I do hope you stick with the sport.

Interesting paragraph from the FAQ page on Hot Liquids web site.

"Who is Hot Liquid?
Hot Liquid Sailing is a company with a friendly modern approach to yachting.
We work hard to provide our sailing school & corporate clients with the highest quality, professional and thorough tuition. Delivering high teaching standards in order to keep sailing a fun and safe pursuit and give our students that little bit extra to promote good seamanship and not just deliver the course syllabus".

We had a full briefing and were shown how to put up the storm sail but were reassured that we would run for one of the marinas if things got bad. I was on watch from 6pm to 8pm and refused to take the helm as I didn't feel experinced enough (I do have day skipper but haven't sailed much recently) At this time we were doing about 7.5 knots overland agaonst the tide and I suggested to the skipper that we should bring down the main. He didn't want to and didn't do so until we had had several problems with controlling the helm. Lowering the main wasn't easy either as the sail was very difficult to control and we were all feeling ill.
I then went off watch expecting that we would head for Eatbourne at worst...

I think he's quite right to give his opinions now, considering what happened I wouldn't want anybody else to go through the same. I think if there had been any fatalities a manslaughter enquiry could well be underway now.
I agree with the advice to contact the RYA.

With the right boat & crew

With the right boat & crew I'll sail in a 10 anyday..... just as long as we have a pleasant destination with good food & great beer…. plus totty & live music always a bonus.... ;)

If you haven’t been out in these conditions for a while it will take a couple of days to become acclimatised, empty the contents of your stomach, acquire your sea legs & start to eat & function again….. but that’s just all part of sailing.

With a few years under my belt on this forum, one thing I have noticed is that my fellow forumites will happily argue black is white between each other.

Never before have I seen a tread, let alone over 230 posts, where everyone is totally in agreement with what they are saying.

The sense of outrage is palpable.
