I'd have thought that any rescue that involves a casualty with broken bones is a notifiable accident to MAIB

You'd have thought right. But remember MAIB only have power to investigate and to make recommendations - they don't have any power to judge or to punish - for that you need the Enforcement Branch of the MCA.

I help to manage a fleet of large container ships. Despite the "just in time" supply chain requirements of the world's supermarkets, car makers and electronics firms, we don't sail into a forecast F10.

I think you're right - and for what it's worth IMO there should be both a rapid response and investigation by the RYA. I only asked about the provenance of the statement as, if untrue, considerable damage could be done to the business.

I think Hot Liquid are managing to do that perfectly well all by themselves!

The words "barge" and "pole" spring to mind here......

Agreed completely. I just don't want anyone to give Hot Liquid the chance to get the thread censored by anyone posting unfounded 'facts' they find unpleasant.

And even if by some riduculous loophole it isn't, it's surely reportable under RIDDOR? Just because they're at sea doesn't mean that a broken bone above the wrist and facial injuries don't count as reportable incidents.

I suspect that their ability to run further Sail Training under the banner of the RYA has already been pulled or is about to be. As I understand it a full investigation is pending.

The problem there is that it would lead to the question that if the RYA have not had an investigation then does that mean the RYA are saying it's okay? In my personal experience the training of this firm is unacceptable and then you have the Myth of Malham Race incident and last years LIBS delivery incident, the RYA are opening themselves up to questions if they act (although perhaps no more than if they dont).

It is well known that I am no fan of the RYA but I am not sure they should be policing this sort of shower, though the fact that showers like this can brand themselves as RYA accredited trainers is part of the problem with the RYA...

Hmmm. Just Read the RIDDOR Regs, what's the betting it would be classed as a "Sporting Injury" and is therefore not reportable "if the injury arose out of the normal participation of the activity"

However the Regs do then go on to say "Injuries should be reported if they were due to defective equipment or failings in the organisation and management of an event."

I know how I'd interpret the requirements but then it's not me trying to cover my a**e!!

The RYA do require certain standards from their accredited schools - how often they are checked or not I'm not sure, but I guess for the most part they rely on the Integrity of the principle ... anyone know if the principle of HL has changed in the last 12 months?

But - if you've got a crew member with a bust shoulder in those conditions then that's probably a Panpan call in itself ...

The skipper said the steering system was destroyed - but the crew member had injuries that were "not too bad"...
Seems a shame that the skipper's enjoyment was ruined by the "very large wave" and the projectile helmsman. The RNLI Coxswain & crew and the helicopter rescue team do seem to have performed Admirably.
Let's hope the injured party makes a speedy recovery.

It is an undisputed fact that RYA accredited training is amongst the best in the world for leisure sailors-if not the best. The RYA only derive the course content to be covered both in the classroom and by THE SAILING SCHOOLS WHO RUN THE COURSES. The RYA do not run courses directly. If an organisation falls down on what is required to be a RYA Sail Training School they should be investigated and action taken against them if required-or constructive critisism given to allow them to put their house in order. It should not be a witchunt. It appears to me that little or no training was involved in this ill founded venture, just mile building and cash flow. The RYA have given their name to Hot Liquid as a Sail Training Centre, both in the UK and Gibraltar. Who else can take this away-it is like an MOT's only garage not being allowed to issue MOT's! The RYA are the only organisation to investigate and disipline if required any Sail Training School under their logo. Any further investigation by other bodies would be for other reasons.

In the vid it looks as though the skipper is steering nimbly with one hand, the other has a vhf to the ear/lifeboat co-ord.

Enough of the wheel structure obviously lasted until port.

If this had occurred on the European coast, who would pay for the call outs?

Spot On

I was one of the crew and that's exactly what happened. The wheel was bent double and we had no steerage until much later when it got straightened. We were in trouble way before that happened though. I was terrified as were all the others. We had 20 hours at sea most of which was terrible.

If you look carefully at the hub... the spokes have been broken off....

I suspect that someone fell against it and bent it... and it has now been bent back into a servicable state...

I wonder how the pushpit got all bust up like that??

I bet they had a knockdown and the helm got thrown onto the wheel...

On BBC I player the skipper's name is given as Charlie Sturrock.

Firstly, doesn'the live up to his first name?
Secondly, the only Charlie Sturrock I can find on Facebook search throws up someone whose profession is given as Bartender/ dancer and stripper https://www.facebook.com/search/results.php?q=charlie sturrock&init=quick&tas=0.06670666585493223
Maybe this explains his lack of judgement??

Reading between the lines of his Tweets it would seem that sailingboy is ex-military and has seen time in Afghanistan. This might explain his slightly skewed measure of what's dangerous. Afterall "It's only wind and water"*
