Also worth noting when you do come to renew that there are several sites with NHS or EHIC in the URL (eg http://nhsehic.org.uk/?gclid=CMyl6q2wgq4CFVE8fAodtFGa4w) that are not official & will try to charge you £10 for the service. To be avoided, there is no charge for renewal through the proper authorities.

And at least when we renewed ours a couple of years ago the official site was fast too.

Just renewed mine & #1 son's. I coudl do mine online but had to call for #1 son's. Very easy both online & over the phone. We now have both myself & SWMBO attached to #1 son in their records.

If they don't arrive by the time we travel on Friday there's no problem. There's an emergency number to call & they will fax through a certificate showing elligablity for treatment.

Mine ran out on the day I went into Preveza hospital Greece. Wife back in the UK got in touch with the department here, they faxed the renewal to the hospital and all ok.. Well not quite, because the admin at the hospital was so crummy that they had to fax it 5 times before they "got" it. I was held prisoner in the hospital for an extra day until they finally found the fax, and missed my flight home.

Perhaps our NHS should hold foreigners until they pay......
