Greece seems not very cheap.

there is an expression in Greek about how to win a war against the Turks along the lines of 'don't use weapons just send them ouzo'.
I guess they haven't sent any ouzo for a very long time :sneaky:
Actually I have felt a little insulted at Turkish hotels when I have ordered a brandy and cola at the bar pick it up and they pour the same brandy on the bar top to clean it.
They may have been trying to give you a message about ruining good brandy with a mixer :p

...too many boats and not enough engineers... They're not engineers now but fitters.
So there used to be engineers in Greece... must've been before our time there.
I recall being told that - as with all humour there's more than a grain of truth in it - "The Greeks have a special name for good marine engineers/mechanics... They call them foreigners."

So, I'm standing in the wine aisle in AB, what do you recommend?
A bottle of Linos or something from Robola, i am certainly not a wine expert, but after living on Kefalonia for 10 years i would not describe the wine as rank, some of the wine sold in plastic water bottles can be very good from under 5 euro!, also some of the tavernas sell a litre of Red for a tenner, you have to pick which one sells decent wine or mouthwash.

After seven years of living in Greece 24/7 I guess I should accept I'm very, very unlucky bloke.

As my new Beneteau Oceanis 30.1 won't be delivered (to Athens) until November 2025, it appears I am too early to get quotes for an annual marina contract. I am waiting on several marinas for a price now. I am wondering about Ormos Marathokampou Marina on Samos - small, picturesque and with adequate facilities. Anyone with any experience of it?

I'm not sure I can add much to my #74. As you have time on your side I'd advise a visit before you commit.

Sellers market. Far too many boats and nit enough engineers. Infact if you want your heat exchanger repaired, they will quote you fir a new engine. Rather than get someone to braze in a new tube. Their not engineers now but fitters.

Glad I sold 2 years ago. Out there at end of September in Poros, nothing but effing great Catermarans. Over crowded and party boats, what a noise.
Chris - Shame we missed you. We were in Poros in week 2 September. We anchored just under the monastery well away from the harbour where everyone usually goes. It was bliss. I spent the Summer in the Aegean and my short observations: easy to find secluded anchorages almost everywhere, nothing felt too crowded except Paros and a couple of the really popular anchorages eg Kythnos, people are delightful. I think on these threads we forget the laws of relativity. I am based in Lefkada. It is probably one third of the cost of the Balearics and I suspect SoF. Quality of work done on my boat is good. Cost is acceptable. Cost of anchoring is zero when travelling and we always stay on the anchor. You do not get chased away by weed Police. The water beats anywhere else I have been. Variety beats everywhere else I have been (to date). Overall yes, it is getting more expensive but not on a relative basis. The one big issue is absolutely the fleets of catamarans and I think they are going to have to get a grip of this at some point. But personally I would not go anywhere else for the moment.

Agree: cheap.and plentiful anchorages and moorings. There is nowhere else like it. But every restaurant is the same. Every village is the same. I couldn't be one of those who spend year after year there. Variety needed!

Don't agree about quality of work/cost.

Exactly what I say, I would go back but only to visit friends and reminisce.
In the six years I was there I met several dreamers that reality kicked in and wanted to move on after investing their all in property there.

Ashtrays! Used to be so annoying to have Greeks puffing away beside you in the non smoking part of restaurants.
