gas spring chart table

Would like to install a gas spring at my chart table.
Any experience and how many newton the gas spring have to be?

You can buy adjustable gas springs. They come fully gassed but have a bleed screw to lower their ‘power’.

Mine comes with a stay in the form of a coiled spring which supports the lid when straight and only needs to be bent to lower it. It may not be exactly what you want but I find it quick and handy.

We have one of these on the chart table. The slightest touch and it collapses.

Yes even more dangerous on a fridge lid -nudge the spring and the lid acts as a finger chopper and it’s quite easy to do. I have bought a gas strut which I am going to replace it with. That said the strut type seem to suffer in old age from slowly sliding shut and there does not seem any way of stopping this gradual failure ? I guess the seals on the strut fails.

I endorse the coiled spring solution, simple and work well, also they last a lifetime.

Shame I don't have a picture but I have a toggle suspended on a bit for string which slips through the finger hole to hold the lid/desk open. Not sure of the Neuton value but if I switched to some dyneema I could probably hang the boat on it!
