Re: Cor!!!

Very interesting Brendan. Certainly would be a fascinating place to work and also coincidence that Crewgirl's father did so. Sounds an interesting fellow.

Re: Cor!!!

hm. Either perhaps some weird molecule-accelrating experiment went very badly wrong (or succeded brilliantly) at CERN, or I'm wrong on the location, whcih seems a bit more likely. Sorry about that, and I'd like to apologise to any physicists who have been fired for diddling their expenses in the last few days. Sorry sorry sorry, and not in a blair way either, cos it was me who got it wrong and nobody else supplying dodgy information such as grenoble being 45 minutes from geneva, or anything like that, just me being wrong. Sorry.

Think that you are actually correct too TCM - I believe that they do have another facility in Genoble but I cannot find out exactly what it is. Seems it might be a training establishment or something - Maybe Brendan knows or may be able to work it out???

Re: Cor!!!

Ah well, my Daddy certainly worked at CERN in Geneva.... you can have my word on that... I was born during the first half of his time there, I distinctly remember. Well OK, I don't - but I certainly remember going back out there in 1970 to live.. Snow skiing & ice skating in the winter, water skiing in the summer.... fondues... raclettes ... chocolate.......... yum!

PS the wine was good too, but I had to grow up a little bit before I could appreciate it...

Re: Cor!!!

Pricing sounds about right. I think the bus used to be no. 33, but then it's some years since I was on a Genevese bus!

Re: Cor!!!

Hell of a long way for a little cat to come, he's based in New Zealand.

I suspect that a ybw meet in a particle accelerator isn't going to get all that many attendees, them being mainly interested in boats and stuff!! <g>

I used to get a No 59 from Greenbank Drive to Princes St in Edinburgh, were you on that one?

Oh piffle!

I want to go to Geneva!

Actually New Zealand's a good idea too. Do they do fondues out there, or is it really all about sheep?

Yes July 1974 I think, Saturday afternoon ... there's a lovely planetarium in Edinburgh.

Re: Cor!!!

Yes I will have to try and get there some time, but is quite a way from here in NZ.

As I said I was whisked through Geneva by a client some years ago returning from the French Alps but it did not register that CERN was nearby.

A long time ago, in fact about the time you were just getting into fondue and chocolate in Switzerland, we had to do a paper in the history of modern physics. The story of the people and the advances (without all the mathematicky stuff) is really intriguing for anyone interested in the very leading edge of science. Thing that I remember striking me was the flow over time of the threads of theories and experiments between the various participants and that so much of it was like building a brick wall, some adding something here to what others had done, and others adding there. And, of course, some bits just fell off cos they ended up being rubbish or through a squabble.

Not been many great NZ physicists apart from Rutherford but a couple of years ago I was invited to a function honouring Sir William Pickering who was head of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, etc from 1954 - 1976 and so headed USA's space exploration over that period. Was quite a treat for me here in this scientific desert. He was about 90 then (he died March this year at 93) and was still just so lucid and fascinating to listen to. He is probably NZ's second most well known physicist and surprisingly both he and Rutherford had gone to the same very small country primary school as kids - must be something in the water there.

Re: Cor!!!

That might explain it - the school is in Marlborough which is wine (especially sauvignon blanc) now not so many sheep, so less sheep droppings in the water and no more clever physicists.
