Interestingly, Stonehouse Barracks had new ceremonial saluting guns installed couple of years ago. These were tested by firing three sequences of five bangs.

Just sayin.

Getting back to the question...........it was a 4.5inch gun most probably firing from a type 23 frigate that I saw on the horizon. It's called gunnery practice. I did see a towed target but it did not appear that they were firing at it. Therefore, probably anti aircraft fire at an aircraft towed target or a drone............ So there you have it from someone who used to do that sort of stuff.
