Five huge bangs, repeated, RN probably?

Maybe if the ship has been at sea for a few months its a warning for the local ladies of the night to brace themselves...... :ROFLMAO:
I don't think the Devonport Brutes ever needed an excuse to "brace themselves". As for the sailors - possibly another matter when faced by that lot...but Jack's a hardy soul and full of courage. (Or Stella. Or rum, or - whatever!)

Not heard of 617 Squadron then? Joint operations. Joint decisions.

Pointless attempt at point scoring, my venerable old one. ?
Not point scoring, but just pointing out that the "two squadrons of fifth generation fighter jets " are not actually all ours. Just hope that we do not have to undertake some form of armed undertaking on our own. Might find that things get a bit "stretched".

As for 617 squadron - I suppose I will have to wait for another TV repeat to get the point of that one.

Yeah, I bet they will never work one up to full carrier strike capability, embark two squadrons of fifth generation fighter jets and deploy through the Suez Canal to the Indian Ocean and beyond.

Oh, wait a minute.......
Oh goody. It can take a bunch of people on a wee trip (just like Carnival Cruises can) with some rather larger, expensive, unreliable and pointless luggage (Maersk will quote for that). Willy waving at its very worst. Bet you a fiver that neither carrier is ever involved in actual combat, thank goodness.

It's the squadron embarked on HMS Queen Elizaberth, in the Indian Ocean......now.

And there ends the report tonight from deep in the heart of the maritime warfare briefing room in the Northern Periphery. Where facts are not to be considered at all. ?

Edit to add, both embarked squadrons were involved in counter Daesh patrols in the Middle East. Google will help you out.

Of course you could also wonder why China and Russia are going to the wall building unreliable and pointless luggage to put on their very own maersk lorries. I rather hope that mutual deterrence will keep generations of peace once more.

One is also hopeful that the Iranian warships that cruised up the North Sea the other day are truly on their way to a Russian fleet demonstration.

But hey, there is always someone who knows better. ?

Getting back to the question...........it was a 4.5inch gun most probably firing from a type 23 frigate that I saw on the horizon. It's called gunnery practice. I did see a towed target but it did not appear that they were firing at it. Therefore, probably anti aircraft fire at an aircraft towed target or a drone............ So there you have it from someone who used to do that sort of stuff.

History wouldn't be on your side at all there.

Things come along, conflicts happen, and assets we all depend on must be protected.

There's always someone keen to upset the applecart.

Prob not in Plymouth mind!
:)
