This comment from MickShep got lost in another thread about dinghy sailors, but I thought sufficiently interesting to drag out and start seperately. It entirely accords with my experience sailing out of Brighton Marina, where underneath great big painted 'no fishing' signs at the end of the breakwaters by the entrance, there are always one or two idiots trying to, I can only imagine, catch themselves a yacht. But the biggest problem is that on politely inviting these gentlemen to fish elsewhere (it's not like the breakwaters don't go on for miles where fishing is allowed) one is invariably caught in a foul-mouthed tirade. I've reported it to the marina authorities on various occasions, but nothing seems to change...

"To be honest, up here in the North I've had very little trouble with the racing fraternity (lots more open water and less boats). But I had an incident in the harbour entrance channel last year involving total w#*ker fishing off the pier with his line accross the channel, With the state off tide I was hugging the the channel only to hear a tirade of abuse from above me, I looked up in time to see a figure in dayglow orange running along the pier in frantic persuit of two fishing rods, their monofilament line, being totally invisible at sea level neatly wrapped around my forestay. The language used was so bad that I had to send my 9 yr old below, had I met him I think I'd have shoved his rods where the sun don't shine. On mentioning this incident once ashore I was told of several cases of irate fishermen actually casting lead wieghts at passing vessels including dinghies. I can only assume that such a missile would prove lethal should it strike a person. The harbour authority have placed signs all over the pier telling people not to fish the channel but they are just pulled down and thrown in the water. Mike. "

How about an automatic paintball gun and a quick run ashore with a baseball bat the iridescent purple should be easy to recognise?)))

It is at times like these you wish you had invested in that Coventry Climax FWP the tinks down the road were trying to sell, and some fire hose, or maybe a fixed fire monitor for the foredeck (it could double as a mooring bollard!). Squirting the barstewards with a fire hose at full pressure ought to discourage them!

cheers,
david

It's not new. Way back in 1976 we were struggling to get past the end of Clacton Pier against wind and tide. Some anglers on the end of the pier got shirty and started casting b***dy great lead weights at us. After two of them had hit us we decided that discretion was the better part of valour, started the engine and went. Oh yes, first we collected the weights and tied them to the guard wires. I'm not sure whether they cut the lines or ran out, but when we took in the spare there were no rods at the end!

I have a foot in both camps here, but I have never been abusive to any boat that sails/motors close to my line. I would always pull it out of the way.

Having said that why not take a video of them shouting and screaming at you and better still if they cast their weights at you, because believe me a 6 oz lead weight traveling at over a hundred miles/ hour WILL kill you if it hits you in the head.

I would then send the evidence to the local police with a covering letter stating that you genuinely believed that they were trying to kill you (please find enclosed video).

If the harbour authorities won't do anything about it maybe the police will?

You could also write to the "Sea Angler" mag and ask them for an opinion.

Language-wise, if you're going in and with a little time on your hands, it would definitely be worth going for a Public Disorder Offence, or whatever it's called. That would curtail his fishing for a day or so. I would if my ten year old was subjected to it. He does quite well enough by himself, without some plonker making him think it's acceptable!
