Re Peter Wright... The biggest obstacle for double tracks to Felixstowe is crossing Spring Road in Ipswich. Most of the other bridges are all ready double and many loops have been extended to allow container trains to pass each other. I think electrification would be next on the agenda. Now if you are sad like me and like this sort of thing...

Very good. Enjoyed the trip.
Speaking of Spring Road. The magnificent 70ft high bridge is still there and used by port trains.
Worth a look if visiting Ipswich.

Hi Aquaboy,

Thank youfor that - I'm really not much into railways, other than to believe that an efficient railway system is essential to a well functioning economy. Since the orginal nationalisation of the UK railways under British Rail, they seem to have suffered from a gross lack of investment which was not much rectified by the Thatcher privatisation / fragmentation. At least the capacity of the Felixsrowe branch line has been improved a bit under the private ownership phase, something which British Rail doggedly refused to consider despite vociferous representations from Felixstowe Dock.

I find it farcical that UK politicians passed laws bringing forward the date by which only electric cars could be sold in the same year as they cancelled the only major rail electrification project in the country.

The Spring Road bridge is indeed an engineering beauty built a long time ago by craftemen. I see no reason that a replica alongside it couldn't be built today, provided sufficient land is available for both the bridge and the tracks each side of the bridge

Peter.
