Its decision day - starting Friday we have got the whole of next week off and I'm looking forward to a good cruise to the CI and France, possibly as far as St Malo - my wife on the other hand who reminds me that our last two cross channel plans this season have been blown out, has in mind picking up a last minute bargain and jetting off to Greece for 7 nights at a cost of slightly less than 4 nights in Poole Marina. I need to make a decision by 5pm today

Problem is I haven't got a clue what the weather outlook is, if I was on my boat I can get a 5 day extended forecast on Navtex which is usually pretty accurate, and be able to make an informed decision.

If we go across in Blue Chip and the weather is blowing or raining like its been for the last few weeks my wife will kill me.

Can anyone help with an extended forecast for the week ahead?

Thanks

well I'm certainly no weather man - but looking at the high pressure system just west of the Azores (http://www.wetterzentrale.de/pics/brack2.html) that's coming our way I'd say we're in for a spell of settled weather with light winds and a few showers as there's the odd front lurking around.

You might end up motoring across the Channel if you go at the w/e as it looks like very weak easterlies...

....and a warm front swinging round from West Ireland (which will miss you) followed by an occluded front which might dump something on you by Tuesday? See it all in glorious technicolor at
http://ows.public.sembach.af.mil/wxcharts/synoptic120.htm
Lots of blue sky but not much puff....

Anyway, why put up with all that greasy greek grub, smelly airports, another exciting plate cracking night out to accompaniment of Zorba the Greek, sqwaking brats (belonging to others, of course) when you can have decent food, peace and quiet etc etc??

Not that I'm trying to encourage you to go, but, if you do could you let me know how successful your Navtex reception was, pls?

Similar decision for me ... I'm gambling on the high pressure becoming dominant. Earliest departure available to me is Sunday and I reckon if I want to sail across it'll have to be then as high pressure centralises around the UK but coastal sailing should be good with the sea breezes kicking in.

Navtex reception!

Katoema is based on west coast of France and it works all of the time within the parameters I have set - NASA Target pro plus. I cross check them with Board terminal 98 from Bonito (German) giving weatherfax as well as SYNOP etc.

See http://www.meteo.fr/meteonet/temps/france/prev/frprev.htm but you must look at it at the last possible moment before you leave to give you the maximum number of days ahead (4). It is very accurate for temperature, wind speed and direction and when you can expect rain. Each day is split into two time slots.

It is interesting to note that the national and regional TV forecasters are not sure what is going to happen after about Saturday afternoon - not even as late as the late BBC News 24 forecast on Wednesday evening. The consensus is that the High won't last long and there is nasty in the Atlantic just waiting to have a go, probably arriving in the Westcountry sometime on Sunday.
You pays yer money and makes yer choice. Or is it the other way round?
