I have a thirsty v8 penta in my holiday 244, im thinking about changing to a v8 omc diesel, does anyone know anything about these motors are they reliable?
Do you know of any other makes that are suitable for a straight swap with ease?

Hi, i think that diesel holidays can be fitted with a volvo kad 32,this in a slightly shorter boat than yours,6.17m as opp0ssed to 7.01,Fairline Holiday 23, GRP, 1982, 6.8m. 1 x Volvo KAD32 (1999) diesel engine, 170hp, 32 kts. 4 berths in 1 cabin. Versatile family craft with huge benefit of modern, fast diesel engine. Lying: MBM extract from advert so he,s done it,advertised in brokerage section of this site...was thinking of getting one then changed mind.
hope this some use

Did you mean GMC diesel? If so, you will find it miles heavier and it will sit a lot lower in the stern. Speak to Solitare about his convertion, he has a really sweet set up.

I have a Fairline Holiday and 2 yrs ago did a complete refit from V6 petrol to VP AP31p 150 hp turbo diesel.

Get in touch if you'd like to know more about the refit.

I've heard some complete horror stories regarding these and boats, but on the other hand I know of loads in Land/Ranger Rovers that are a sweet as a nut.
Not and engine I would consider for a conversion in a smaller boat. Damn heavt engine as col says.
There are various companies offering thes lumps as conversions to replace various marine/car lumps. For what you get they "seem" cheap, but have always found that theres one or two probs that need sorting and invariably takes more money that you first realised.

We have replaced a pair of AQ211 with GMC V8's in our Spirit 3000. However would be wary of effect of weight penalty on a boat of the size of a 224.

Whilst they are theoretically a straight swop there are inevitably a few hidden snags.

GMc diesel engine is superb basis. But do not be tempted to do it on the cheap with a recon engine.

There are some "dodgy" bodged marine conversions around, things like exhaust risers, heat exchangers etc. which are better suited to an armoured car than a boat.

Personally the only one truely thought out as a complete package, with sound engineering is the MarineDiesel. (www.marinediesel.nu)

If you want further guidance suggest you talk to Marine Maintence 01621 860441

See my article in Feb's MBM.

Just put in a baby Merc D120 / Alpha, and add water.

(ok a littel diesel fuel as well!)

No more than £9K, all new engine, drive leg, control, instruments.

Less weight.

Over 20 knots cruising.

4 gpg.

Very quiet.

No smoke.

No joke.
