For us, it is 10%. I think this is pretty normal for a factory build. Stock boats or boats on the production line already order will be less.
I think Beneteau (Dickies?) wanted 30%, though would accept 20%, on the Monte Carlo 37.
When we pay the factory, they tie it to the boat using the hull number in a client acount, so effectively you own 10% of the boat already. We also provide bank guarentees against manufacturer insolvancy or non-delivery
what happened to the chap that lost his deposit on a prestige (I think) when diva (I think) went under if the manufacturers are meant to get the deposit

As I understand it, Deva may have placed the order with Jeanneau but never passed on any payment. The effectively kept the money and used it to shore up the company.
I would expect to see some form of communication from the builder/builders bank that the deposit and/or stage payments had been deposited.
It is a tricky one, as I have been thinking long and hard about how comfortable I would be personally handing over a large amount of money on the promise of delivery in a couple of weeks. We have a client account, but that doesn't really protect the money fomr me using it, it just means that if I go bankrupt, any money in that account at that time cannot go into the main pot for the creditors. The bank guarentee was the best solution. It costs us between 0.5% and 1% of the amount guarnateed, but if the factory go under or the boat doesn't arrive then the money is protected.
It is another arguement for using a bank to fund the purchase, if only for an initial 6 months. They will ensure everything is correct before paying and if it does go tits up they are legaly obligided to assist you as all three groups involved (customer, bank and dealer) enter into a tri-partite agreement which carries some legal weight.

There were many others who also lost deposits and even boats.
Funnily enough I was looking at a load of boats that suddenly turned up for sale the other week on a vacant lot. When one was suddenly 're-posessed' by an angry owner, I wondered who all the other boats belonged to and where they came from.....
Is that the Tallon Auction at The premises of FTS Hatswell Ltd, Zone 2, Deeside Industrial Park, Unit 51 3rd Avenue, CH5 2LA? Only asking because I am after a boat or two from it!

Cheers
Ref Montecarlo; I know that is what Beneteau wanted but I got them down to a £2500 holding deposit (refundable) until Seatrial and then I had to make it up to 20% (incl extras) to confirm order. Funnily enough my contract re-negotiations went 'tits up' soon after so did not continue with it. How many people renegotiate their package for 16% less!
Anyway, back to the main point. My Holding Deposit on a Glastron was 10% and Chaparral was 5%. Oh and just incase I always pay the deposit with a Credit Card.
The Tallon sale/auction boats are some of the residue of the Deva debacle.
The Major spied some other boats, not in the Auction collection.
Tiss a complicated mess.
I have just looked at "Westline Boats" and would probably not have bothered if it wasn't for Lou!
He is obviously on the pay roll /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
If you would like me to seatrial a W34 for a year or two, no problem!
