Selling a boat - acknowledged defect - double reduction / contract cancellation ? Is this fair / legal

If the seller and buyer remain on good terms.....they could agree to an estimate from a boat yard that they both accept. However, the seller (as a boat repairer) might think that the (experienced) buyer was planning to do the repair himself and the discount reflected that.
If I am the seller, and feel this tyre kicking has gone on far too long, I might feel like keeping some or all of the deposit.
If I am the buyer, I think I would say that I am partially responsible for this mess by trying to do the surveyors work for him, and should be ready to roll up my sleeves and do it myself saving the labour part of the costs.
So....bit of a conundrum....but the longer it runs the more entrenched everyone will get
