Deck paint

Paint has started to lift on my ply and canvas deck, sheets of the stuff as big as dinner plates.
The canvas itself seems fine, apart from two or three holes which will be treated with epoxy. The question is, should I be thinking about abraiding the surface of the canvas to get better paint adhesion? I am a bit worried about exposing the canvas fibres.
I have a litre tin of non slip deck paint in the right colour, but I read somewhere that exterior masonry paint was just as good... in a greater variety of colours.
Anyone out there with experience of this?
Thanks in anticipation.

I've used a type of floor paint bought for £5/ltr from my local Trago Mills store. It gives a good grippy surface, and was originally intended for garage floors. It's been on my canvas deck for over a year with no sign of deterioration. I simply used a stiff brush to remove old loose paint without abrading the surface too much, and then flooded the deck with paint and brushed it out as fast as I could.

I have not used it on canvas, but on my GRP covered ply deck I have Dulux textured masonary paint. This is a water based paint, quick drying and reasonable price (unless you only want a small amount). Grip is excellent and, although I do not know how many years this coating had been on when I bought the boat (probably 4 years) I added one extra coat 3 years ago and it still looks respectable. I have had to touch up one small area due to abrasion, but this was very easy as the only preperation was cleaning and the join did not show.
