Hi all.

the top coat on the GRP is coming away so i guess its all going to have to come off.
do you think this is a deck paint or an epoxy coat?
if i take it back to the GRP could i just paint that?

I should have said, it seems to have come away over 70% of the surface so its just sat over like a shell but not "stuck"

That looks like traditional deck paint.
But it could be something like masonry paint.
Or basically almost any 'paint with sand in it'.

On a GRP deck, the hard part for painting it is the area that is not anti-skid and supposed to look smooth. These areas are better to be painted with a spray gun if it is a 2 part polyurethane that is the most durable paint for the job. 1 part paints are also available and can be applied with roller and brush but i am not sure of the results.
For creating the anti-skid areas there are a lot of options and probably it's the easiest part.

Trouble is, if you want to use 2 part paint, you can't apply it over the top of 1 part paint, meaning you would need to strip it right back. I did Triolas decks (the last boat) with 2 part paint - it looked amazing, but it was the hardest job I did on that lovely boat, but also the most rewarding. I wrote up a full guide below, which may be of some use if you are contemplating it!

Paint your deck outside in winter - Triola - Albin Ballad #50

P.s. I applied 2 pack with a brush and rollers and it went on just fine with a great result. Spraying 2 pack is a non starter as it requires an air fed mask, breaking bad style :D

P.p.s You don't need to go right back to the GRP, just back to the old gelcoat is fine.

Great job you did, I ll read in detail thanks for sharing!
I had no option than spraying when I did the topsides because it was in the middle of the summer and the 2 part would get tacky in few seconds- not possible to be applied with a roller (temperature 35 Celcius).

Ofcourse the OP needs to get down to Gelcoat, fairing it, prime it, and then paint it.

You can't use an epoxy paint.

Although epoxy resin is durable in other ways, unfortunately, it will break down in direct sunlight because its chemical structure becomes unstable when exposed to UV light
Is Epoxy Flooring UV Resistant?

I be doing mine soon and I'll us polyurethane. I'll mask everything off and roll the sand/paint on. I'll roll and tip the shiny part.

My paint supplier can supply three types of hardener:
  • One for spray painting (very quick acting)
  • A hardener for brushing (maybe used for fairly cold weather.
  • And a hardener for hot weather but slow enough acting so it give you time to "tip" before it "goes off"

You can't use Epoxy paint, however you can use epoxy as a base coat to seal the old gel coat/GRP, and then put 2 pack on top of that. I went for the below, Interprotect being the epoxy layers.

Thumbs up for 2 part epoxy paint as a primer before the final 2 part polyurethane. I was advised by the tech department of the brand i used.

P.s
you can use gelcoat on GRP, apply antiskid sand before it cures, brush the remaining sand away after curing , and apply a final coat of topcoat (finishing gelcoat).

+1 for an epoxy system... i.e. 2 part epoxy primer for wear/water resistance and a compatible top coat. Maybe something like Jotun Penguard HB (the high build means you can sand out high/low spots)?

Well I used an epoxy primer too.

When I was applying the two part polyurethane I accidentally used the epoxy hardener but it worked fine! ?
