Going by the stamp on my new flexible hose, it's the date of manufacture. I have seen guidance that indicates that the life span depends on usage and physical factors such as the degree of movement incurred and on the date fitted. Mine was already a year old when I bought it.

The date is the date of manufacture and it is recommended that the flexible pipes are changed every 5 years.

I've just had some flexible pipes fitted in Portugal and the are marked 2009/10, which suggests that they should be replaced in 2010.

The previous pipes were marked 1993, the year the boat keel was laid, (or whatever they do with GRP), which suggests year of manufacture.
