I hope this is useful info. I don't know why they use the word 'amnesty', they aren't illegally held firearms.

Only 6!! I must have 40 at least - excluding the ones inside the liferaft which is overdue servicing.

And they wonder why people just lob them overboard when they make it so difficult to get rid legally.

Are sailors really that irresponsible? I don't think so.

.....

Why don't you cc this to the RN?

I think they've two Type-23s (Monmouth & Montrose) so they could lob in 3x old minesweepers as well.

I'd like to think you're right. Unfortunately, there are too many reports of them being used as fireworks inland and starting fires and, worse, let off at football matches for me to believe it

Football matches, seriously !!!!!!

IMHO letting them off is totally different to dumping them.

Last time I let my smokes off on a beach at night to get rid and let my handhelds off in my garden.

Nov 5th there are para Flares going off all around the Solent (well, I usually count five or so on my yearly Firework night bimble so it's a typical activity). I'm sure I've seen flares let off at the Cowes week Fireworks as well, but maybe that's a false memory. (Never done that myself.) Suspect flare demos often use flares close to being TEP, surely they don't source brand new every time.

So I agree with CS - if you're gonna dump them you'd just drop them outside a police station or chandlers so I doubt many would dump at sea. In contrast "letting off" certainly happens. (Didn't most us chuck old handhelds on the bonfire on Fireworks night as kids?)

I too find the term 'amnesty' deeply offensive: the MCA required me to buy the damn things, I've never used one, and I wasn't even allowed to let one off as a sailing instructor to show students how to do it.

There is a certain type of unhelpful bureaucratic logic that compels you to do something then demonises you for it ....

Ocean Safety are about £2.00 a flare to dispose, incl VAT. They have a few branches.

Also Ramona have various centers that accept TEP and a collection service, but a bit a pricy for collection. Pyrotechnic Disposal » Ramora

Personally, I had about 20 and disposed of them at Ocean Safety Greenock.

I think those of you want to dump them at sea or suggest leaving them outside a place station are just lazy and irresponsible.

Also on the recent laser thread some were bleating on about their danger yet on here are happy to set them off to dispose of them. Incredible hypocrisy.

Most of the pyro companies sell dummy flares and all come with instructions. A decent lesson plan can be developed to teach use without having to actually set them off.

If you have access to an amnesty, great, use it and eliminate the risks of storing quantities in you house, shed, garage etc.

I think that's aimed at me. ? I wasn't happy to let them off. I spent 3 months back and forth with the local coastguard who repeatedly made appointments and failed to keep them, or failed to make appointments and then wondered why I wasn't there.

After three months of time wasting I created a test rig to allow me to reluctantly set them off from 3m away. I made the kids stay inside the house and watch from behind a window. My test rig got scorched! I'm happy to accept that may have been overkill, but I'm a wuss. (And perhaps effective communication shouldn't require bravery!)

I didn't know they could be disposed of for £2 each, if I had I would have jumped at that, as would thousands of others. The CG didn't tell me, nor did anyone on here in the dozens of threads on this topic.

Details here:

Ocean Safety Ltd - Ocean Safety opens disposal facility at four UK branches for all brands of pyrotechnics

CHC are making a kind offer and I’d not regard the word ‘amnesty’ as offensive. It is slightly more elegant than ‘free disposal offer’.
6 per year should be enough.

Good point. I'm not keen on the term but it is a fairly effective short hand term to get the message across.

The 6 is a bit of a red herring - I doubt multiple visits are strictly policed.
