Been here since 1991. We look out over Mounts Bay and The Mount and a work commute to Truro took us about 45 minutes before retirement. Boat in Falmouth. Marinas in Falmouth and Mylor are nearest. We are members of RCYC and they have a daytime launch in the summer for members which is handy for our swinging mooring off Trefusis beach. Mylor marina has a slightly better service I think but Mylor is expensive. And as stated, the water taxi.

So any of the towns villages to the east of here seem to be viable and the opportunities for a nice house without going into Camborne/ Redruth (which are still a bit 'tired' despite efforts) are legion. People from out of County probably don't understand that Cornwall, (outside of the loony July/August time) is very pleasant and nowhere is that hard to get to in a reasonable time. You'll do lots more motoring than you expected as everything is a bit spread out.

However, sitting here, looking out at green fields and the misty Channel, who can beat it?

We made this move fifteen years ago and are still delighted! Sailing wise it's just wonderful and Mylor, Devoran, Perranwell, Ponsanooth and nearby villages are all great and not overrun in summer. Mylor is a superb place to base the boat - moorings at Restronguet Sailing Club cheaper than the harbour but DIY (not at Restronguet! They are Mylor if you don't mind 6 months afloat) and you can still buy a permit for the water taxi. Both the local clubs are welcoming.

Work wise the commute into Truro is worth considering - we didn't realise what it can be like and just got it right by accident when the first house fell through. Coming into the hospital from St Austell or A30 directions will be slow during rush hour. In the small villages I mentioned earlier you can cut through on quiet back roads and save a lot of waiting.

Feel free to PM me if you want any contacts / info. Schools wise I know a fair bit as I work in education.

I might be stating the bleeding obvious but just in case... you should be aware that there are extensive waiting lists for berths and moorings at most of the bigger marinas and clubs in the area. I waited 5 years for a swinging mooring at Mylor Yacht Harbour and just as it was offered, I also was offered a swinging mooring at the Club. Anomalies do happen where people get a fast track and seem to jump the queue, and allegedly this may be connected to spending large amounts of the folding stuff on other services offered by the same outfit (e.g. they refit your boat for you!)

However - presumably - if you moved to the area and thus became a local resident you could also go on the waiting list for one of the council moorings administered by the local harbour master, or lease a private mooring of your own.

I assume you are aware that you can sail a shallow draught boat up the Fal, all the way to Truro itself?

We did similar move a few years ago when wifey got job at Treliske. We lived onboard on the Fal - while we did house hunting. Lots of nice places to choose from but we found Golant on the Fowey. (Village web site is http://www.Golant.net.) Our little boat is on the drying moorings - no waiting list - and big boat snug in deep water at Wiseman's Reach - if you are a full time local resident FHC will sort you something. Travelling time not that much of an issue as shift work means away before rush hour and back home after it has gone. Hope you manage to find somewhere to enjoy as much as we love this place.
