Congrats Ellie

Well that's that then chaps . We are back on track ,She wasn't at deaths door in hospital as some suggested nor had she runaway. sad to say these threads will now die as there is nothing really to add other than the pat on the back one liners which will soon dry up .
It seems that we have fulfilled Ellie's needs from this forum as there hasn't been a word from her offering her thanks to those who have supported her throughout her "ordeal". Hay ho !
 
And I hope to God that that space is allowed to just exist with peace and harmony.

What's that noise? Ah yes, dozens of old farts scrabbling around to find out what Facebook is, so they may express their indignation at not being kept up to date or thanked for their wisdom.

I think that is the key difference. I have a small library of around 600 sailing books, a fair proportion of which are "We bought a boat & went on a long(ish) voyage". They are almost all a great read (a few are not that well written, but most are) and the journeys are mostly accomplished with little in the way of funds & sometimes with very little or no previous experience. The big difference is that they invariably do the journey before writing the book or making great claims about what they are going to do. The exception is probably Donald Crowhurst as already mentioned.

My point is that the Internet, sponsorship & "Marketing" leads to some people perhaps raising expectations way beyond what can be sensibly achieved. Some, like Ellen Macarthur seem to rise to the challenge, others may not. Setting out your highest aims publically on the internet increases the pressure enormously. I wish Ellie luck & reading her blog suggests that she & her Dad have put a lot of thought into what is likely to go wrong & sourcing solutions. If she carries on like that she stands a good chance of success, but her approach to this forum, which can be so supporting of people in trouble has actually turned some potential helpers into knockers.

There must be a lesson there.

As I wrote before, the comments on the original thread were overwhelmingly positive and helpful, with just the occasional good-natured tongue-in-cheek flippancy, until Eleanor stopped participating. Whether or not that was linked to Preston Marina's postings, it looked incredibly ungracious ... and I still have not seen a word of thanks to them. It looks as if Eleanor is now trying to control the message more, but it's going to be difficult to do that and get a social media buzz going. The success or failure of the business project is going to be as interesting as the success or failure of the boating one.
 
It's a lovely day, sitting at anchor after a sail up to Aldeburugh, SWMBO and younkers' ashore so I'm feeling benevolent and hereby promote you to Grand High Admiral Clyst. No finer man have we served under and we will not see his like again.
