Riffing on awol's point; the Trapper 500/501 sails pretty well and have decent space inside, the somewhat 'floating caravan' looks keep prices reasonable. If you are set on winning the wooden spoon best go for what has a comfortable cockpit for lounging in and a price that's easy on your pocket, just scan the listings, go and see boats for something that 'sparks joy' rather than fixating on a specific design, especially if you intend buying locally rather than buying on the south coast etc.

I understand your position. The problem is that if you get into the Moody 336/Sigma 33 area - around 15.25 minutes in the CYCA system - you will be among the carbon sail, fenders on the pontoon, empty tanks, etc. wannabees. Get something a bit slower - around 18 minutes - and you are in with the stay on-board; pots, pans and full drinks locker; dacron sails; mongerel crew mob who share your ethos (or lack of it). Something like a Nic 35 or other old tub is ideal.
I didn’t have carbon sails before but I was definitely a wannabe! Was fun while it lasted though!

I have some beautiful racing sails available for a Moody 336.

I don't know what Awol is thinking about the 336 fleet but we raced the 336 with 2 anchors, booze for a month, dinghy, outboard and more teacakes for 2 weeks

My apologies, though for booze the largest part of your crew is teetotal, I was thinking of the Sigma 33 that rafted up with us at SS and unloaded everything including fenders and warps across our deck onto the pontoon. And anyway, only 2 anchors?

I looked into this when I had an old tub (CYCA ~17min) but there was no-one to race against in the East Patch evening series :-(. Check the results in the fleets you're looking at to see who's actually racing slow-handicap, as the NoRs may be more inclusive than is realistic!
Likely not an issue for bigger events. Just depends on your aspirations :)

Some people take one design racing very seriously(possibly too seriously as we never obsessed about weight control and still managed to win plenty), although in the case of the 33 the rules prohibit emptying the boat as it does require it to be inhabitable and useable as intended (i.e. cruiser part of cruiser racer) with mattresses, anchors etc.

Some years many in fact the PRO decided that one of the sigmas must be at it and failed a bunch between races and the only thing that was found was the emergency water water had been used on them much to his annoyance

Did you read my post about the budget....?! But how come. Did you sell the boat without them?!

Aha quick bit of detective work later. Now a J109? How did you find the 336? I'm not sure I want to do up what is now getting on for a pretty old boat! But I suppose it would let me move forward with a lowish purchase price and then spend loads of money over time......!

Between myself and my mates there’s always a chance of another 336 coming into the gang. The new owner did not want them and took a sizeable discount.

I have a spinnaker that’s been used 6-8 times in light winds only and a no.1 Genoa that’s been used a dozen or so times sub 12 knots.

these were our sails only reserved for light days but the no.1 should be good up to 18 knots and the spinnaker 20.

the biggest racing modification you can make to a 336 is a cockpit mainsheet. Keep the coach roof set up for spray hood and cruising and the cockpit traveller system for serious racing. Backstay tensioner helps a lot for windy days but outside of this it’s just a normal 336 thats needed.

I am crap at boat work and diy but coincidentally I installed a very successful cockpit traveller in my Parker 275 so I am a specialist in thag one job.....! actually maybe I'm not crap at it. Just lazy!

So hopefully there will be some 336s on sale in the autumn when people don't want to foot the bill for the winter berth. And closer than Dorset.....

FWIW I raced a 336 and had half decent results with it. But it definitely is a boat that needs a decent breeze - we never got anywhere on the 5kn days. Didnt like the mainsheet arrangement and the cockpit is shallow, Internal accommodation is good. But in the end it is a cruiser, not a cruiser racer. Sold it and replaced with a Starlight which was a brilliant piece of kit.
