You're sure that KREW2, Talulah, Giblets and Mudisox aren't coming? :ambivalence:

Appreciate the update, the-drifter but I leave on your forum names as its how others recognise us. For those that have never taken part, later I ask for a private e mail address so that I can send out a spreadsheet with such info that you are happy to share with other participants eg , boat name, type of boat , departure point with date & approx. time, e mail address, mobile tel no, this is so that anyone that want to sail at similar time (channel virgins) can arrange it - just gives that extra feeling of security for some. I do add crews names if forum names. You can keep info private if you wish. I only pass onto Cherbourg Marina a list of Boat Names to get the berthing discount and no personal details.

NOTE - For those that have received this info in the past please note I am now retired and my business e mail address will no longer work. Private yahoo one( if you have it) still works and mobile unchanged.

Regards june the 6th. I've seen you post on a few threads so msybe you deserve an answer. . I was in Portugal for the previous week and made arrangements to go straight to the boat from the airport for ann early start on Friday, I had no crew so this would have been my first crossing single handed. The forecast for the weekend was looking far from ideal especially in my sub 23 footer but we kept hoping for improvement but finally thought it best to cancel. The other reason for me and why I kept quiet at the time wad during our stay in portugal my Father in Law was taken to intensive care, (we weren't told until we got back. ..). He's on the mend now but at the time for me to nob wouldn't have been a wise move. Iirc the up take was very small and I thought we were all in touch and knew each others plans.
I'd like to try arrange it again in the future but will keep it between the freinds I've made here. Last year I tried and felt obliged to try in poor weather due to being the "organiser" something I didn't want to repeat this time, even if I do have to put up with comments like those from the
which may or may not be a bit of gentle pi?? taking.

Of course it was s p. Take. I just happened to be there, so thought a wind up would be relevant !!
Actually i did not get there until late evening so a promised trip to the celebrations courtesy of a friend did not come off.
Really disappointed

Daydream believer you raise some points that a more general answer than Colin's may be useful

The September Scuttlebutt Cruise has been going for some 13 yrs now and is very popular with many. The responsibility to sail is always the skippers and that's why we never require a deposit so no inducements to sail if bad weather or suitability of the boat/crew for the conditions is marginal.

There is usually about 40ish that make the trip.

In the last some 8 yrs when Fergus and myself have been organising it we have only had bad weather on one year (2013) but even then a few boats braved the journey and on nearly all the other years we have enjoyed really amazing sunny weekends in September.

The question of either moving the September cruise to earlier in the year to hopefully enjoy even better/hotter weather has frequently been raised but we have decided against it but suggested others might care to arrange other Cherbourg cruises earlier in the year. Attempting to identify a date for good channel weather for any weekend is understandably a lottery.

All credit to colhel for having a try. I was sorry that with my work and charter boat commitments I could not support Colin's efforts. Now that I am retired I hope to do far more sailing in future years including long weekend trips to Cherbourg & CI's. Like Colin I may try to let these trips be an open invite to others.

I note you have not asked to join the September Scuttlebutt cruise ( I can't recall you attending any previous years) - if you did I don't think you would be disappointed as a number get together on the Friday night, then wine tasting around midday Saturday, afternoon pontoon gathering with cheese and wine and finally Saturday night YC dinner.

Anyway hopefully see you on a future cruise.

Colin are you making it this year - Fergus's boat?

Haven't been updating this thread as been away sailing. In early Sept I will start the spreadsheet listing boats /departure port/contact details etc so if you could let me know once you have a plan and any contact details you are happy to share with other participants please let me know. i circulate these details ONLY to participants. I also only give a list of participating boat names to Cherbourg Marina to get group discount and no other contact details.

NOTE now retired so either PM me or use my private e mail address (either Google one or Yahoo one) if you have it.

Anyone with a spare berth looking for crew? Reasonably competent, sh!te with a spinnaker though! Poor to zilch culinary abilities (though still do my share and no ones died of food poisoning yet), totally immune to seasickness, non smoker and very light alcohol drinker (which might not be an asset if I believe the stories about the consumption of alcohol posted on these forums!). Any combination of dates. Happy to share costs.
