Wanted to start this thread now as only a few weeks before I go off sailing for 6weeks.

The Scuttlebutt Cherbourg trip has now been going for some 13yrs. This year it is arranged for the W/E 13/14th September. Often newbees and X channel virgins are tempted in the knowledge that there will be other boats in the vicinity.

It has developed from a Saturday evening meal at the Cherbourg YC to also include a Saturday afternoon boat/pontoon gathering for drinks and nibbles, I usually start the larder with a selection of wines/beers and nibbles which others also contribute. We bring labels on which you write your forum name so you can put a face to a poster and introduce yourselves. Obviously the latter depends on the weather but we have had amazing sunny weather for the last few years and they have been a great success (with the exception of 2013!!). I introduced the afternoon gathering to ensure the event was more inclusive and welcomed strangers otherwise there was a risk of just a few gatherings on individual boats of people that only knew each other. We have great support from the Cherbourg Marina and Magali Harmon has offered to arrange our afternoon gathering in the hall of the local sailing school if the weather is bad.

After the evening meal a few do collect on a few boats and drink well into and for some through the night!!

Most go on the Friday and return on the Sunday but a few do extended stays. I have negotiated discounted berthing at Cherbourg.

Many informally connect up with others on the Friday night and dine together at a restaurant.

In September I collate a spreadsheet and distribute it to participants, but only to their personal e mails. This includes such info as you are happy to give but usually includes VHF channel, mobile numbers , departure port and likely time so that participants, especially newbees, can contact others and sail in company. The spreadsheet also enables some last minute ship jumpers if anyone has problems with their own boat before departure.

We also run a thread for crew available and crew wanted as we try to fit in everyone who want to go - its also good if you want to do your 1st X channel with someone more experienced.

Fergus has already booked the YC. The majority favoured the cheaper €27 menu, There are Vegi options please let me know if you’re a Veggi. Please remember to bring cash € for the meal as the YC require us to settle the total bill not 20 or so individual bills. Last few years there have been 40-50 attendees!

If you intend to stock up with cheap wine for the winter months Normandie wines has a good selection of mainly French wines and many country’s beers. We usually arrange a free wine tasting for the Saturday morning and Normandie wine offer a extra discount.

Final decision whether to sail if up to each skipper, no deposit so no loss if weather does turn bad.

If people are interested please add your names and possible total number to this thread.

Feel free to add you comments if I have missed anything or not properly described the flavour of the event. Your comments will also help keep this thread live.

Three of us on Ariam, no veggists.

Think you've got your neaps and springs a bit off this year though - it's the Brambles cricket match on the 11th, so must be one of the biggest tides of the year :) Not suggesting you change the date though - I and my crew (and I'm sure many others, not to mention the Yacht Club) have it booked in now. Means a bit of a change from our usual habits though, which is why I'm pointing it out - other people may also need to revisit their tidal plans rather than just doing the same as last year.

Usually we head west on the evening ebb after work on the Thursday, and set out through Hurst at a civilised time on the Friday morning. This time we want to visit the cricket on the Thursday evening, and obviously afterwards the tide will be flooding - it's depressing to be punching a strong tide in the western Solent when it's late in the day and you just want to stop and go to bed. So if we go that way we'll probably pull in at Beaulieu. To catch a fair tide the following morning means a real crack-of-dawn start though - possibly pre-dawn. So maybe we go east-about the Island instead, which means more favourable streams, but my preferred place to stop would be Bembridge and that doesn't work due to heights. Hmm. Depending on the weather, we could anchor somewhere off the eastern coast of the Island instead, but Ariam bobs and slaps a lot more in an exposed anchorage than Kindred Spirit ever did. The early-start West option does at least mean we'll get into Cherbourg relatively early in good time for a meal out - but my crew may actually prefer to cook on board anyway...

I guess the right answer will depend on the wind direction on the day (for shelter overnight and what course we can lay on the crossing) and my crew's various preferences towards getting up early, less-sheltered anchorages, and eating ashore.

Put me down. Probably just 2 of us, unless we get ship-jumpers (who are welcome)

Hi I would love to join this event, but would like to have some crew to do it with, so if there are some who would like to go, but don't have a boat, please feel free to let me know.

Thanks

For those that have not seen the-drifter other thread he has a Jeanneau 49 deck saloon. I have an older Jeanneau 43DS which proves the point there is always someone with a bigger one!!

I usually am well oversubscribed and limit the number on my boat to 6-8. Let see if any interest from other formites first but I am sure I can find a number of prospective crew for you so put the weekend 13/14 in your diary. Leave it a week and if no interest from formites I will PM you and get some of my sailing friends to contact you.

Happy sailing in your new boat the-drifter.

Thanks Pete for pointing that out. Not sure how that happened but IIRC we/I nominated the weekend to assist long term forward planning in a thread at end of 2013.

I am just hoping the weather gods are kinder to us this year. I usually like strong tides to get me down the Solent quickly but this year I will be going from my new berth in Poole.

I very much hope to be there IF a) I get back in time b) the boat doesn't need major repairs c) I can get time off any job I may get ... and d) ...... anyway, please pencil Wanda and 2 people on the list. If the boat breaks, or the crew mutinies, I will hitch a lift with one of you again, if I may- I promise to try not to get seasick yet again!!

Put Angele down as a possible, please. I was thwarted two years ago by fog - my fault for deciding to sail over early on the Saturday, rather than 12 or more hours earlier. :(

I'll try to sail over on the Friday this time.

It'll be somewhere between 2 and 5 of us.
