Please don't confuse religion with morality.

[/ QUOTE ] I can't see where Nickel is confusing anything.

A peaceful and loving existence is the basic teaching of most of the world's religions. I believe in a Divine Being and my belief tells me that it is how we try to live that matters to God, not how often we go to Church.

As far as I am concerned, a Humanist is is going to find a much quicker route to Heaven (should he/she choose to accept it) than anybody who perpetrates evil in the name of, or under the cover of, religion.

Like Nickel, I attend Church because I enjoy doing so, not through a sense of duty.

Mrs jhr was at a Convent school for a year or so - though she's not a Catholic. She learned, during that time, that holding hands with boys led to unwanted babies.

Personally, I'm in the same position as you on this subject...

I have absolutely no belief in a divine being, and would, I guess be firmly described as an aetheist..... However, I do also respect the views of those that do have a religious conviction, and wouldn't stoop so low as to criticise someone for something that obviously has great meaning for them...

Acts of war and hate (at least in recent times) perpetrated by 'religious' groups, as must surely be realised by any thinking person, aren't really representative of what the majority religious moral position is.... and to blame those attrocities on religion per se is a little naive....

We get people staying with us who are very religious and dash off to church on Sundays.
Often they are very pleasant and interesting people. I don't discuss religion with any guests as I feel it's personal and I may offend them because my opinions are definitely aetheist.

But I certainly can't understand it.
