With the latest Vatican pronouncement on driving with the statement that 'cars can be an occasion for sin', expect boats to be proscribed any day now. There's a lot more sinning goes on on boats than in cars!

Re: Catholics and sailing, a poll.

God borers and anchor salesmen? Not so far apart; there was a hymn which started "Will your anchors hold in the storms of life" /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Trouble is, people who do know God can seem almost as boring as the rest who know there isnt any such thing.

Re: Catholics and sailing, a poll.

People who sail with me often seem to be praying! Could it be something to do with the fact that I have a tabernacle and a pulpit, do you think??

I would have thought the obvious answer would be an exemption scheme based on what could be called Vatican Vouchers. You would be credited, say, one voucher for listening to The Daily Service on Radio 4, perhaps 2 VVs for watching Songs of Praise and so on. Then when you are 'forced' to miss Mass, you redeem your VVs at say, 6 per non-attendance and get automatic absolution. Sort of divine Nectar Points /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

[ QUOTE ]
Psalm 19, verse 1
THE HEAVENS declare the glory of God; and the firmament shows and proclaims His handiwork.

Job 9, verses 4-13
4 God is wise and powerful-- who could possibly oppose him and win?
5 When God becomes angry, he can move mountains before they even know it.
6 God can shake the earth loose from its foundations
7 or command the sun and stars to hold back their light.
8 God alone stretched out the sky, stepped on the sea,
9 and set the stars in place-- the Big Dipper and Orion, the Pleiades and the stars in the southern sky.
10 Of all the miracles God works, we cannot understand a one.
11 God walks right past me, without making a sound.
12 And if he grabs something, who can stop him or raise a question?
13 When God showed his anger, the servants of the sea monster fell at his feet.

I agree..... God is Awesome!

Rabbie...... Good to see you coming up with some some intelligent reasoning here! "Yawwwnnn!. Who on earth wrote that? Load of twaddle." .... clearly shows that you're a thinking man! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
Well..... that's the end of all discussion because Rabbie has declared it a 'load of twaddle'..... keeps things simple I suppose. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I have a friend who is invisible.
I see him as a big rabbit, but he takes on many shapes
He protects me against the evil in the world
I rely on him to guide me
If I have enemies he will protect me
If I am ill and others ask him he will heal me.

That's a load of twaddle.

Where have I heard it all before?

Intelligent reasoning?. I've only given my opinion after all, but, if you really believe what you have quoted then any kind of reasoning with you must be impossible. No wonder the world is in the state it is when such nonsense is preached. Sea monsters indeed!.

OAM was quoting from verses written probably 3,000+ years ago, and thats the problem with religion - its been around almost as long as man has. Doesnt mean its right, or that its wrong. or that it has not caused almost as many problems as politicians do, and it has undoubtedly been the biggest single factor in the developement of civilisation. So isnt it a little bit shallow to write religion off as a 'load of twaddle'?

If I had happened to have actually met LakeSailor's 'big rabbit' - and found it seemed to be delivering the goods, and had been for a lot of people for a very long time, then perhaps it would make me a little less cynical about 'Rabbitism' as a religion. But that wouldnt make rabbitism any more acceptable to someone who hadnt encountered the rabbit, and for whom the whole idea of an Invisible long eared friend in the sky was ridiculous.

Civilisations response to trying to organise itself to relate to and think about God has resulted in some of the worst excesses in mans history.

Choose to refute God, you will have no difficulty in proving yourself right to do so: the evidence against it is overwhelming. Intellectual, scientific and moral honesty demands there can be no such thing.

But for people who do find Him, God is - awesome.

I think that is the point I was making.

I studied Religious Knowledge (Theology I think they call it now) up to "A" Level but became convinced it wasn't something I could give credence to.

I don't dismiss people who have a faith, but I can't understand it.

IMHO just about the most tedious type ever invented is the militant aetheist. At least evangelist all singing dancing types are socially interesting and carry some personal conviction.

Agreed LakeSailor: Thats the difference between "knowledge" and "faith". Either God is, or God isnt: if he 'is', then why cant we all see him. If he 'isnt', why is he so real to some of us? And why can those for whom he is real, not prove it to the rest?

And other than the Pope, who says we shouldnt go sailing on a Sunday anyway?

Harry. I agree entirely with what you say - but to say that an entirely imaginary entity is 'awesome', be it a big rabbit, a God, or a green lamp-post, is sheer nonsense, with nothing to confirm it, or prove its existence. Your comment 'Civilisations response to trying to organise itself to relate to and think about God has resulted in some of the worst excesses in mans history.' is also entirely correct and is in context to this very day. Faiths have a great deal to answer for when we observe what faiths, in their fundamental form, exhibit in world terrorism today. Without these unthinking faiths in 'Gods', what a better place the world would be today. Catholicism is no exception, and all are equally unreasoning. To answer your question about 'twaddle' being a shallow answer to barely- remembered reminiscences of stories of thousands of years ago then printed in the 17th C - what else can any thinking person describe them as? Except nonsense.

Simon. I assume you refer to me as a ' militant atheist'. Nothing is futher from the truth, the reasons for which I will not venture further into. If 'God' granted us the power of reasoning, then atheism, militant or otherwise, as you call it is the gift of 'God'. The unthinking happy-clappy type of Evangelism is possibly socially interesting and may carry personal conviction - would you deny this to someone who is aethesitic ?
