Can\'t read the forum on new PC...

....its all too small!

Have just bought a Sony Vaio which is the dogs rollocks, XP, Office 2003 etc, CD/DVD RW all the other toys. But when I look at a website its titchy.

It is a 'wide screen' monitor, only 13.3", but the displayed page doesn't expand across the screen - its off to one side, to maintain the perspective, I suppose.

So my displayed page of this forum is actually about 6" square and I'm hunched over the thing to read it.

Anybody know how to fix this easily?

To give this a boaty theme, the old (3.5yrs!) Dell can now be used for passage planning, etc and as comms machine on the boat.

Have you tried changing the screen resolution in the control panel?

Start, control panel, appearances and themes, change the screen resolution.

Re: Can\'t read the forum on new PC...

On my XP Pro its

Start > Control Panel > Display > then the Settings Tab

Then there should be a slide bar, probably currently set to 1024 by 768. Take it all the way down to 640 by 480 and see how that is. You can try working back up to 800 by 600 if the latter is too big.

Mind you, unless you can read this, it's not going to help!!

Re: Can\'t read the forum on new PC...

Thanks chaps, I don't think I explained myself very well.

The standard resolution for this machine is 1280 x 800, which is a wider ratio than 1024 x 768. This is because the monitor is physically a widescreen unlike the standard 4:3.

The window is filling the screen, ie no black stripes down the side, and the tool bar is going right across the top. However there is a large blank white area off to one side of the ybw pane.

Reducing the resolution makes the text bigger, but with diminished clarity, and the windows don't fit the screen properly either.

Still haven't explained it very well - Looks like I will have to put up with it this way.

I envy you your Vaio, they are nice machines. Permanent fix to the problem is Start>All Programs>Accessories>Accessibility>Magnifier /forums/images/icons/smile.gif.

PS I have not gotten used to the cold back home here again - was too spoilt whilst away.

Thanks for your helpful suggestion - I had anticipated something pithy like why its because of my age, sex life, or whatever.

You lot are all the same - can't hold a serious conversation at this time of night - or morning depending on your hemisphere.

More seriously - I find the same thing on the monitors here. For example, using 21 inch monitor at moment 1280 x 1024 pixels and the YBW page only takes up around 2/3 the screen width. Can't remember what it looks like on the notebook, but is certainly readable.

Yes, after spending a couple of weeks away in 30C plus then hitting cold winter back here, did find I needed the Windows willie magnifier tool.

At least BigNick hasn't the display problem we sometimes have when they forget to turn the tube upside down so the piccie stuff is right way up down here.

Okay, got the answer this time [possibly].

Go into User Options here on the forum website. Choose Edit for Display preferences, and the second option is something called 'Style sheet'. Choose one of the drop down options which includes large fonts. Garish with large fonts is particularly attractive, and the colours will no doubt come out really well on your flash screen!

Hope that works.

Re: Can\'t read the forum on new PC...

sorry i can't offer an ideal fix though i do understand your problem. looking in the source code for this page i see that it has an absolute screen width set to 760 pixels. on your hi-res screen this is very small.

the only way to get it more visible is to decrease the screen resolution to a setting of around 800 pixels across. (right-click on the desktop and select properties (your special screen driver will have its own menus so can't advise on the exact actions required).

Hold down the control key (Ctrl) and roll the wheel on the mouse at the same time,

Once you've done this a few times, you won't care how small the text looks on the screen!

You'll probably end up pxxxing red flags like the above sad specimen.
