Campbeltown Update

The berthing company no longer exists, this will be a totally new operation when it starts up (soon I hope).
The berthing company never had VHF. To my knowledge, although rafting was often required with the previous single length pontoon, nobody was ever told to go elsewhere.

It was pay in the hotel Last year I think the year before it was the tourist office that took the money. Anyone know what it will be this year?
I liked the name and shame notice board that stated the names of yachts that had "forgotten"to pay.

The hotel was still taking payments for buoys a week ago. The marina certainly looked a few weeks away from completion.

... unfortunately now the home for 1000's of seagulls - they are going to need some cleaning on opening next week.

I don't know what Stranraer did, but the poontoons were much cleaner last year. I'd got used to warning the crew to expect to slide across the pontoons as they got ashore, but not any more. Maybe Campbeltown can do the same.

The reason the seagulls shit on the pontoons is only because there are no yachts there to shit on, once the pontoons are in use they will change their habits, however ducks are a different matter, stupid creatures of habit who can produce massive quantities of really slippery stuff.

**Rejuvenated old thread alert**

We are in Campbeltown at the moment hiding from some weather. As some above have said I think the place has an undeserved bad press. It's not a bad place. Restaurants and pubs ashore are fine, (be careful in your choosing but that could be said of anywhere). Decent walk out along the shoreline, past the sailing club, out to the mouth of the loch. Very good shoreside facilities with the marina. Buses to outlying areas should you be a keen walker. Chandler in town and plenty of other shops (don't think Bond Street though). Chippy, quality unknown. Some interesting artefacts. Decent promenade walks. Lovely location within the loch and great views to seaward (can't see it at present as it is dreich). The Black Sheep pub on th front is well fitted out, someone has invested some serious capex. Staff therein suffer from SAF (Smacked Arse Face for the uninitiated) but otherwise okay, no draught beer unfortunately.

All in all I reckon Campbeltown is nice enough and we would certainly come again.

I thought the Black Sheep had quite a range of local ales. Crew sampled them extensively earlier this summer. Staff were OK, but trouble sometimes getting an empty table if you want to eat.

I used to quite like the Taj Mahal, but last time I went it seemed as though it was being run by someone who'd never run a restaurant before. Food was OK to good, but service was a bit hit and miss.

The Linda MaCartney memorial garden is worth a few minutes visiting, not far from the harbour.

If you are waiting to get round the MoK or down the North Channel & the weather's not playing you can do a day trip to Carradale & back in sheltered water if the wind is NW to SW. Visitor moorings, & a great walk to the big beach to the south of the village.

The black sheep had plenty draft beer in may, we had 3 days drinking in there :)

Interesting. We were in the bar that is accessed from the door which opens directly on to the loch-front road. Definitely no draught beer there yesterday. All lagers on gas valves. There was one draught pump but not in service, maybe they'd been drunk dry. Had to resort to a Peroni. Might check again to day to check I'm not doing them a disservice - drinking for research purposes you see!

Perhaps you need to brush up on your terminology - as I understand it draft = not in botte/can not cask / hand pulled...

Possibly, but you don't know unless you ask, they all come out of a hand pull on the bar. Cask and draft. (Obviously not bottles/cans) regardless, they had an extremely good real ale, sadly the name escapes me, but I'm pretty certain it wasn't the only one. The memory may be understandably hazy after the three days, it was that good :)

Apart from its rather unfortunate name, Campbeltown is a lovely place.

It has the Aqualibrium, possibly the world's first combined library and swimming pool, Is the historic picture house still open?
