If you're like me, I spend a lot of time connected to the web - including browsing this forum. I have a BT Anytime contract. BT have pestered my to get BT Broadband - but I don't want it.

At the end of this month - and last month - the response time of BT's system suddenly deteriorated so that it was useless for browsing or collecting e-mail. It was , however, OK when I used another ISP.

I called BT and complained, alleging that they were artificially degrading response time at the end of a month for heavy users in an attempt to force me towards their Broadband product. Of course, the call centre operator denied it and suggested I call 151 and report a fault.

... but within 30 seconds of ringing off, the response time was back to normal.

I make my living in IT so I am confident that it was not my equipment.

I used to be a senior General Manager with BT so I can imagine a junior manager devising a 'super' scheme to make more money from those b*****s who actually use their system!

Am I paranoid or does anyone else experience this problem.

PS I suppose if you are, you won't be able to read a long post like this until December 1st.

Not sure that you\'re right...

I use BT Anytime. I'd be the first to complain that "Anytime" doesn't mean anytime, but it's actually plenty of time for me. I don't remember BT pestering me to get broadband. What I do recall is BT offering me a free anti-spam service which is absolutetly brilliant! My e-mail inbox is transformed! No more endless offers of finance and viagra!!! I chose BT as my ISP because I thought that, at the end of the day, they were more likely to be able to deliver the goods. So far, I've no regrets.

broadband joke

i keep asking bt for broadband but they say they don't plan to provide it as there's no demand!. if you call the number they give in the tv ads the menus take you through as far as 'place an order' then cut you off.

Re: broadband joke

I must say the I use Broadband from BT & Pipex.

Once tried you will never want to go back to the bad old days of a slow modem.

The only problem being that not everyone can get it.

Re: broadband joke

It is possible to demonstrate the demand yourself.

If you can find enough people in your locality who want the service then BT will provide it. I'm not sure what the number is but I know of one case where this has been done successfully

Hi Peter

When we first got back to the UK I signed up with BT but stayed with them for only the first trial month as they cut the "unlimited" hours to 150 with a 2 hour max. connection. I suffered exactly the same as you did and have now gone to virgin who are £2.50 cheaper, it is UNLIMITED and they don't cut me off.

However this weekend things have slowed down but I'm attributing this to the foul weather and everybody being on line.

It also pays to check how much of your RAM or DRAM memory is being used and clear that every so often while you're on line as it tends to get more and more occupied and clears itself when you switch off hence the "back to normal" after disconecting then going back on line.
