Broken Glass Under Engine???

So I looked under the engine and found broken glass, covered in engine coolant.
Am I missing something? How do you get this much glass under the engine? It's both fore and aft of the small bulkhead under the engine. Most of it is aft. Some is surrounding the through hull for sea water to engine.
How does this happen? Something I should be concerned about?

Salt crystals !

Pick one up , dissolve it in some warm water and taste

Better test: Dissolve in distilled water, add a drop of dilute nitric acid and a drop of silver nitrate solution.
A white precipitate will confirm that it is salt.

Are you sure that is glass not say salt crystals :)

Wow. The thought literally didn't cross my mind.
Eventually the day will go by that I won't be a 100% rookie! LOL :)

Lookat the shape here

That is about the coolest link I've seen in a while. I didn't even know that growing sodium chloride crystals was a thing.
I will definitely have to try it! Thanks again ?

BTW, this now qualifies as the easiest 'problem' I've had to fix yet. Nice. I needed an easy one ;)

It is such a steep learning curve that you are climbing fast. Do not worry there will always be someone here on the forum to solve or advise on future problems. Many of us have done something similar in the recent or distant past.

You found the leak then?

It's really slippery stuff so I think it's probably coolant. Since I have been recommended to do the impeller anyway, I'll make sure that's cleaned up and sealed off well, then I'm planning to double clamp all the thru hull hoses. At that time I'll clean up the valve and de-rust with some WD40. Hopefully I will have nailed the leak. Hopefully it's just spillage from the 'winterizing' we'll see. Will post updates as I have them ;-)

assuming it's salt, def get rid of it, rinse out well with fresh and find the source
corrosion brewing there .....

OK, will do- thanks!
